WALTER
A. HAAS
Walter
A. Haas, president and director of Levi Strauss & Company, was born in 1889
in San Francisco, California; the son of Abraham and Fannie (Koshland) Haas. He graduated from the University of
California in 1910 with the degree of B.L.
Mr. Haas was associated with Haas
Brothers, wholesale grocery firm, from 1911 to 1917. From 1917 to 1919, during
World War I, he served as second lieutenant with the Field Artillery, 57th
Division, United States Army. In 1919 he became associated
with Levi Strauss & Company and in 1921 became director of the San
Francisco Bank (concurrent with Levi Strauss association), and in 1922 was
appointed vice president of the company. He has been president of the Iris
Securities Company since 1927 and president and director of Levi Strauss &
Company since 1928.
Mr. Strauss is a director of the
following companies: Levi Strauss & Company, Iris Securities Company, San
Francisco Bank, Haas-Baruch & Company, California Pacific Title Company,
Tide Water Associated Oil Company, National Ice and Cold Storage Company, and
Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Trustee of Mills College;
director of San Francisco Federated Fund, Mt. Zion Hospital, and Jewish Welfare
Fund. Former president of San Francisco Chamber of
Commerce and of San Francisco War Chest.
Member of the following clubs:
Family, Concordia-Argonaut, Presidio Gold, Olympic, San Francisco Stock
Exchange, Menlo Circus, and Atherton.
Mr. Haas married Elise Stern on
October 18, 1914; children: Walter A., Jr., Peter E. and Rhoda (Mrs. Goldman).
