JOHN
GUTMANN
John Gutmann, artist and photographer, was born in Breslau,
Germany, on May 28, 1905. The son of Julius and Ida (Fleisschauer) Gutmann.
Received the B.S. degree from State
Academy of Arts and Crafts, Breslau, Germany, in 1927; A.M. degree from State
Academy of Berlin (Germany) in 1928; student at University of Breslau from 1923
to 1924. He came to the United States in 1934 and was naturalized in 1940.
Mr. Gutmann
was art instructor for the German Government, Berlin and Brandenburg, from 1928
to 1933; associate professor of Art at San Francisco State College since 1938;
photographer for magazines and newspapers, represented by Pix, Inc., since
1936.
From 1943 to 1945 he did still and
motion picture work for United States Office of War Information in China and
India. Holder of one-man exhibitions of paintings and photographs in museums
and galleries of United States and abroad; permanently represented at San Diego
Museum, De Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, Mills College Art Gallery, and
Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He was represented in United States
Camera Annual, 1941-48. His work has been published in national magazines,
Life, National Geographies, Asia, Saturday Evening Post, etc.
Mr. Gutmann
is married to Gerrie (von Pribosic)
Gutmann, painter who has exhibited twice at De Young
Memorial Museum, San Francisco, Santa Barbara Museum, New York galleries, etc.,
all one-man shows. He lives in San Francisco, California, at 2960 Scott Street.
Member of American Association of University Professors; and
College Art Association.
