FRED H. GREEN

 

 

      Fred H. Green, who is now general manager, secretary and treasurer of the Atlas Heating & Ventilation Company, Limited, of San Francisco, one of the largest concerns of its kind in the United States, is a native of Rushford, Minnesota, where his birth occurred May 22, 1884. He is a son of John and Mary (Hall) Green, the former now being deceased. John Green was born in England in 1834, and was brought to the United States as an infant by his parents. They first settled in Utica, New York, where he was reared and educated. The family moved to Minnesota prior to the Civil war, and in that conflict John Green served as a soldier in a Minnesota regiment. His active career was one of farming and various industrial pursuits, and his death occurred in 1901, when he was sixty-seven years of age. His wife, who survives him and is now a resident of Ontario, California, was born in Utica, New York, and is a descendant of an old Empire state family of German origin. Four sons and two daughters were born to their union.

      Fred H. Green is the youngest of the children born to his parents. He was a pupil in the grade and high schools of Rushford, Minnesota, and then entered the University of Minnesota, which conferred upon him his civil engineering degree in 1907. He earned his college education through his own efforts, having been employed at the Mill Creek power plant of the Edison Electric Company, in which connection he worked with pick and shovel, and endured many hardships to satisfy his ambition. After of engineering in Minnesota, and in the fall of 1907 he came to California. Here he became connected with the firm of Veile, receiving his diploma, however, he immediately took up the work Blackwell & Buck, engineers for the Great Western Power Company, at that time engaged in working on the Big Bend project. For two years he continued with this well known company, then resigned and was made manager for the Atlas Heating & Ventilating Company of San Francisco. His efficiency and engineering intelligence soon became so effective that he was appointed to the additional positions of secretary and treasurer in 1909. The Atlas Heating & Ventilating Company, Limited, is engaged in the manufacture of furnaces, heating and ventilating equipment. Approximately one hundred and twenty-five people are employed by the company, and it is considered one of the largest in the country. Most of the business transacted by the organization is in the states of California, Oregon and Nevada. Mr. Green is also a director in the Salta Company of San Francisco.

      On August 10, 1909, in Tulare, California, Mr. Green took as his wife Miss Mabel McKiernan, who was born in Hannibal, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Green have two sons, as follows: Fred H., Jr., born September 4, 1910; and George R., born July 23, 1911. The Green residence is situated at 344 Santa Clara avenue in San Francisco.

      During the period of the World war, Mr. Green served on the alien custodian board, and in every way contributed his support to the local patriotic drives. He is a republican, but of independent political views and actions. His religious faith is that of the Episcopal Church. He is a thirty-second degree Mason, holding membership in Mount Davidson Lodge, No. 481, F. & A. M.; the California Consistory, and Islam Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He belongs to the Olympic Club and the Lakeside Country Club. Hunting, fishing and golf are his favorite sports. He has a record of vigorous support of civic movements in San Francisco, and has consistently maintained a public-spirited attitude which has gained for him many friends.
