JOSEPH G. GALLAGHER, JR.

Prominent among the younger attorneys of San Francisco, California, is Joseph G. Gallagher, Jr., whose offices are situated at 917 Phelan building. He is a native of this city, born December 19, 1905, and is a son of Joseph G. and Mary Margaret (Welch) Gallagher.

The Gallagher family is one of the oldest and most respected families in San Francisco. The grandfather of Joseph G. Gallagher, Jr., was a native of Boston, Massachusetts, and was a veteran of the Mexican war. He was a pioneer settler in the bay region, and during his career engaged in mercantile pursuits, in shipping and the seafaring business. Joseph G. Gallagher, the senior, was born March 6, 1865, in San Francisco, and was here reared and educated. He is one of the reputable citizens of the community and for the past twelve years has served as superintendent of the board of public works. He is a democrat in politics. During the period of the World war, in 1917 and 1918, he rendered meritorious service as a member of the San Francisco draft board. His wife was born in Vallejo, California, and her father, a Civil war veteran, was a pioneer of that city. By her marriage she is the mother of two sons: Charles Frederick, who is a stock and bond broker of San Francisco; and Joseph G., Jr., of this review.

Joseph G. Gallagher, Jr., completed his public school education by graduation from the Mission high school in 1923. He continued his studies at Santa Clara University, and from this institution received the Bachelor of Science degree in the year 1927.

From boyhood days, his ambition had been to prepare for the practice of law as his life’s work, and he accordingly entered St. Ignatius, which conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1929. Having been admitted to the bar of the state of California, he immediately took up active practice, and has enjoyed marked success therein. He has specialized in inheritance law and tax appraisals, and his ability was signally recognized in 1929 by his appointment as assistant district attorney.

In San Francisco, on the 27th of November, 1928, Mr. Gallagher was united in marriage to Miss Andrea Beyerstedt, a native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and a daughter of Henry T. and Emily Marie (Olson) Beyerstedt. Mr. Gallagher is a communicant of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, while fraternally he is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He has been known as one interested in football and golf, which may be considered as his hobbies. Despite the comparatively few years he has been an active member of the San Francisco bar, he has made extraordinary progress in his profession, and has acquired a clientele of most satisfying proportions.
