ANTHONY S. DEVOTO

The favorable position which Anthony S. Devoto holds at the bar in the city of San Francisco is one which he has created for himself through his able conduct of legal work, his devotion to his profession, and his ethical procedure. He is practicing in association with his brother, James Devoto, and their offices are situated at 68 Post street in this city.

Anthony S. Devoto was born in San Francisco, May 24, 1885, and is a son of the late Antonio and Catherine (Santocceli) Devoto, both of whom were from Genoa, Italy, and were married in Trinity Church in New York city in 1858. In 1860, they took the long voyage around the Horn to California. Antonio Devoto was one of the pioneer grocers on North Beach in San Francisco, and continued successfully in business until 1906. He then retired to private life, and survived until 1926, his death occurring when he was in his eighty-ninth year. He was an exemplary citizen in every respect. At one time in his career, he purchased a tin house which came from Holland. He placed it first at Powell and Green streets, and later moved it to Stockton and Francisco streets. It was a real curiosity, and large crowds gathered to see it while it was being moved. Mrs. Devoto died in the year 1902. By her marriage to Antonio Devoto, she was the mother of eleven children, seven of whom survive.

Anthony S. Devoto attended the Washington and the Hancock grammar schools in San Francisco, the  Lowell high school, from which he graduated in 1903. The law was his chosen life’s work, and he acquired his professional training at the University of California, which conferred upon him the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1908 and the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1910. He was admitted to the California state bar in 1909. He likewise studied and trained under the valuable tutelage of his brother, James Devoto, eminent San Francisco attorney, with whom he is now associated in active practice. He is a member of the California State and the American Bar Associations.

On November 24, 1920, in San Francisco, Mr. Devoto took as his bride Miss Dorothy Jennings, a native of this city. They have become the parents of two sons, namely: Justin Anthony and Donald Jennings, aged respectively nine and six years (1931).

Fraternally Mr. Devoto is affiliated with the following Masonic bodies: Roosevelt Lodge, No. 500, F. & A. M.; San Francisco Chapter, R. A. M.; and California Commandery, No. 1, K. T. He is past president of Stanford Parlor, No. 76, Native Sons of the Golden West, and also belongs to the Olympic Club. Public speaking has always appealed to his desires, and he has done much of this in the city. Sojourning in the mountains, walking trips, and fishing have been his favorite recreations. His association with his fellows, whether in business, in social circles, or in civic activities, has been productive of true confidence and goodwill.
