THOMAS ABRAHAM DAVIES

One of the foremost members of the Masonic fraternity in the state of California is Thomas Abraham Davies, of San Francisco, who holds high office in the order and who has carried on well the fine traditions of the name of Davies in Masonry established by his honored father before him.

Mr. Davies was born in Columbia, Tuolumne county, California, January 19, 1864, and is the only surviving one of the four children born to William A. and Katherine (Staring) Davies, now deceased, and who are mentioned in extenso above. He was educated in the common schools of Stockton, of San Francisco and of Sacramento, California, and after laying aside his textbooks he worked for a period of three years on a cattle ranch. However, he preferred a different sort of occupation, so moved into San Francisco, where he was deputy county clerk and clerk of the superior court for five years, also deputy clerk of the justice court for one year. In addition, he worked for one year in the Morning Star mine at Iowa Hill, Placer county, California.

Mr. Davies was made a Mason in Mission Lodge No. 169, in August, 1888, and still retains his membership in that lodge. In 1899, he was appointed assistant to the grand secretary of the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons; assistant to the grand recorder of the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masons; and assistant to the grand recorder of the Grand Commandery, Knights Templar of California. He was exalted in Mission Chapter No. 79, of San Francisco, in 1901, and received the council degrees in California Council No. 2, of San Francisco, in 1905, and the commandery orders in Oakland Commandery No. 11, in 1903. He was elected grand recorder of the Grand Council in 1905; grand secretary of the Grand Commandery in 1914; and recorder of the order of High Priesthood in 1916, and is serving as such at the present time. He affiliated with the Palo Alto Chapter and Commandery as a charter member, and has filled the offices of high priest and commander of each of these bodies. In 1910, he was elected recorder of California Council No. 2, R. & S. M., in which position he is yet the incumbent. He is likewise a member of the Scottish Rite bodies and Islam Temple of the Mystic Shrine in San Francisco.

On June 12, 1917, Mr. Davies was married to Miss Mamie Fuller, of Placerville, California, a descendant of one of the pioneer families of that historic vicinity. Mr. Davies is in every respect a true patriot of California and a loyal citizen of San Francisco. He is a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West, and is past president of Stanford Parlor.
