CHARLES
STROTHER CHANDLER
Charles Strother Chandler, prominent attorney of San Francisco, with offices at 582 Market street, has the unique record of having a successful practice in two states, in California and in Nevada, in each of which he maintains an office and has important legal connections. He was born on a farm in Baker county, Oregon, March 10, 1876, and is a son of George and Adelia (Ison) Chandler, the latter now being deceased. His father and his grandparents crossed the plains to Oregon in a covered wagon, and in the northern state George Chandler became a man of many interests. He served in the state assembly and senate there, and yet resides in the city of Portland.
Charles S. Chandler received a most thorough education in preparation for his life’s work. He attended the public schools in Oregon, then entered the Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State Agricultural College), and was graduated therefrom with the Bachelor of Science degree in 1895. Thereafter he was a student at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, which institution conferred upon him the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1899. Next he matriculated in the Hastings College of Law, from which he received the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1901, and was admitted to the state bar in the same year. For six years thereafter Mr. Chandler engaged in the practice of law in San Francisco, in association with Curtis H. Lindley. In 1905 he went to Ely, Nevada, where he was retained as counsel for the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company, and also for the Nevada Northern Railroad Company, affiliations which he yet holds. He continued to practice law in Ely until 1924, in which year he returned to San Francisco to make his residence, although the legal firm of Chandler & Quayle, which was formed in 1907, still has an office in Ely. Mr. Chandler conducts considerable litigation in the federal court in Carson City, and spends much of his time in attending to his firm’s Nevada cases. He is popular in that state, and has served two terms in the Nevada legislature, having been speaker of the house in 1921. He is a member of the San Francisco, the California State, the Nevada State, and the American Bar Associations.
Mr. Chandler has attained thirty-two degrees in the Masonic fraternity, and is a member of the Mystic Shrine. He belongs to the Commonwealth Club and the Down Town Association of San Francisco. Aside from the arduous duties of his profession, he finds his favorite diversions in fishing when opportunity offers. He has become known as one of the most enterprising and active of the local attorneys, and has in every respect observed the ethics of the bar.
