GEORGE LEONARD BULAND
George Leonard Buland, attorney was born in greenwood, Wisconsin, o April 6, 1897, son of Dr. George L. and Bertha E. (Mason) Buland. His parents moved west to Castle Rock, Washington, in 1900, and he attend grammar and high school there.
He received the A.B. degree from Reed College in 1916, then studied law at Columbia University where he received his LL.B. degree in 1919. Editor of the Columbia Law Review from 1917 to 1919.
Mr. Buland began law practice in Portland, Oregon, in 1919 and in 1923 became a partner in the firm of Dey, Hampson & Nelson, which continued until 1930. From 1926 to 1930 he was lecturer at Northwestern College of Law; president of Kalama State Bank, Kalama, Washington, from 1923 to 1930; editor of Oregon Law review from 1927 to 1930. From 1930 to 1944 Mr. Buland was assistant general counsel for the Southern Pacific Company in New York, and eastern general counsel from 1944 to 1945; director of Pacific Fruit Express Company, 1935 to 1944, and president of same, 1943 to 1944; associate general counsel for Southern Pacific Company, 1945 to 1947 and general counsel since 1948; now vice president and general counsel; member of Law Committee of Association of American Railroads; member, Conference of Railway Counsel New York; director of St. Louis Southwestern Railway Company; president of El Paso and Southwestern Railroad Company, Nacozari Railroad Company, and director and officer of various other subsidiaries of the Southern Pacific Company.
During World War I he served with the United States Navy, 1918.
Member of the American, California State and Oregon State Bar Associations; New York County Lawyers Association; San Francisco Bar Association; San Francisco Chamber of Commerce; and the following clubs: Pacific-Union, Family (San Francisco), Menlo Country (Redwood City).
He is a trustee, Reed College, and vice president and director of Columbia Law School Alumni Association.
Mr. Buland married Anne D. Shea on September 10, 1924, and they have two children, Nan and George. Their Home is at 75 Crescent Drive, Palo Alto, California.
