BRUCE
Starr
Bruce, business executive, was born August 23, 1894, in Santa Clara County,
California; son of Morris and Agnes Adams (Lewis) Bruce. He received the B.A.
degree from Stanford University in 1915 and the M.B.A. degree from Harvard
University in 1917.
Mr. Bruce began his career in
association with Frank B. Peterson Company, San Francisco, California. He was
vice president of Welch and Company, San Francisco, from 1927 to 1934 and
president from 1934 to June 30, 1950. From 1934 Welch and Company was a wholly
owned subsidiary of C. Brewer and Company, Limited, and on June 30, 1950 it was
dissolved, Mr. Bruce continuing as vice president and director of C. Brewer and
Company, Limited.
Mr. Bruce is also president and
director of Paauhau Sugar Plantation Company and
Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Company; vice president and director of The Oceanic
Steamship Company; vice president of Hakalau
Plantation Company, Hawaiian Agricultural Company, Hilo Sugar Plantation
Company, Kilauea Sugar Plantation Company, Olokele
Sugar Company, Limited, Onomea Sugar Company, Pepeekeo Sugar Company and Wailuku Sugar Company; treasurer
and director of Bay and River Navigation Company; director of Matson Navigation
Company, California and Hawaiian Sugar Refining Corporation, Limited, Crocker
First National Bank of San Francisco, and Pacific Guano Company.
He is a Republican and belongs to
the Episcopal Church.
On November 11, 1926, Mr. Bruce
married Florence Elaine Welch. They live at 3845 Jackson Street, San Francisco,
California.
