EDMUND G. (PAT) BROWN

 

 

            Edmund G. (Pat) Brown, Attorney General of the State of California, was born in San Francisco, California, on April 21, 1905, and is a second-generation Californian. His maternal grandfather drove a stage between Hangtown and Sacramento, California, during the ‘49er era. His mother was born in Venado, Colusa County, California, and his father in San Francisco, California.

                        Mr. Brown sold newspapers as a youngster. He earned his college education by working days and attending the University of California Extension Division at night. He is a graduate of the San Francisco Law School, from which he received his LL.B. degree. He was admitted to the bar in 1927 and is a member of the San Francisco, California State, and American Bar Associations.

                        A leader in Democratic affairs, Mr. Brown was delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1940, 1944 and 1948. He served as District Attorney of San Francisco for seven years, being first elected in 1943 and re-elected in 1947 for a second four-year term. Mr. Brown completed in January 1952 his first year in office as Attorney General of the State of California.

                        During his service as District Attorney, Mr. Brown innovated a Crime Prevention Department to deal with both juvenile and adult crime; also set up a special bureau to handle cases of first offenders, for the purpose of rehabilitation. In recognition of these records he was appointed chairman of San Francisco Coordinating Council, which includes all youth agencies; lectured at the University of California on the subject of juvenile delinquency; also was president of the District Attorneys’ Association of California.

                        As a private attorney, his practice included handling of cases for American Federation of Labor Unions and for municipal employee group. He has served as director of Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District and as a member of the California Code Commission.

                        Member of the Commonwealth, Elks, and Lawyers clubs. Founded and served as first president of the Order of Cincinnatus.

                        Mr. Brown is married and has four children: Barbara, age 20; Cynthia, age 18; Edmund, Jr. (Jerry), age 13; and Kathleen, age 6.
