WILLIAM S. BARNES
W.S. BARNES, District Attorney for the city and county
of San Francisco was born in this
city in 1863. He is the son of General W.H.L. Barnes, the well known attorney
who for more then a quarter of a century has been one of the most prominent and
gifted advocates on the Pacific coast.
W.S.
Barnes was reared and received his preparatory education here. He went east,
entered Harvard College
and graduated with the class of 1886. Deciding to adopt the profession of his
father, he entered the law office of Charles W. Gould, New
York City, and also took a law course at the Columbia
Law School, New York, where he graduated. He was admitted to practice in 1886.
Upon his return to California he
became managing clerk in his father’s office and two years later, in 1888, he
became a partner, retaining this connection until the fall of 1890. When he
received the nomination on the Republican ticket for the office of District
Attorney for the city and county of San Francisco, and was elected to that
position.
Mr.
Barnes was appointed by Governor Perkins a member of Division Staff with rank
of Major, and served during the latter’s administration.
