John
Henry Barbat, M. D.
John Henry Barbat, M. D., whose office is at No 1702 Folsom street, San Francisco, has been engaged in the practice of
medicine since 1888. He is a native
Californian, born in San Francisco, in 1862, and is of French and Scotch
parentage, his father having been a native of France and his mother of
Scotland. His father, Dr. John Barbat, was one of the early settlers of California, and
was also one of the pioneer physicians of San Francisco. After practicing medicine a short time he
established one of the early drug stores of San Francisco on Pacific street, between Powell and Mesa, then in the business center
of the city. He remained in that business
until his death in 1886.
The subject of
this sketch was educated in the public schools of San Francisco, graduating at
the high school of this city in 1879. He
then entered upon the study of pharmacy, attending the department of pharmacy
of the University of California, where he graduated in 1880, receiving the
degree of Graduate of Pharmacy. He
followed his profession in his father’s and others’ drug stores for four years. In 1886 he commenced the study of medicine,
entering the medical department of the University of California, where he
graduated in 1888, receiving his degree as Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Barbat then
entered immediately upon the practice of medicine in San Francisco. He now holds the position of Demonstrator of
Anatomy in the medical department of the University of California, where he was
also Assistant Demonstrator for the first year after his graduation. He is a member of the State Medical Society
of California, and of the County Medical Society of San Francisco.
