JOHN WEATHERS

The death of Mr. Weathers, December 19, 1890, deprived Sana Clara county of one of her most active and progressive citizens. A native of Tennessee, he sought a home in the far west in 1857, making the trip to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Soon afterward he located on a farm on the Kings road, five miles southeast of San Jose, purchasing at that time one hundred acres of land. From this tract he subsequently sold sixty acres. He improved his ranch in many ways and was very successful as a farmer. In his political views he was an active Democrat, and rendered efficient services to his party and his section as county supervisor, having been twice elected to fill that important office. He was also elected road overseer and was serving as such at the time of his demise. As a man of consequence in his district, and one who was greatly beloved by all, his death was deeply mourned, and his many useful deeds perpetuated his memory.

In Santa Clara county Mr. Weathers was united in marriage with Miss Julia F. McCray, who resides on the home farm, and who formerly resided in Georgia. In 1857 she came to California with her parents, and in their party were also three young men, one of whom was her future husband. They came by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and upon arriving in the state at once came to the Evergreen district, Santa Clara county. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Weathers, of whom one son and two daughters are now deceased. The four sons living are: H. M. (a resident of Stockton), V. T., C. P., and C. V. The two last mentioned reside on the home place, which was also their birthplace. They have entire charge of the ranch, which they manage in an admirable manner, and in their dealings they bear out the reputation of the family for fair dealing and integrity of character.
