GEORGE G. TAYLOR

GEORGE G. TAYLOR. Although still a young man, George G. Taylor holds a place of responsibility and trust in the little town of Mountainview, Santa Clara county, Cal., where he was born and reared and where he has spent all of his life. For the past five years he has served efficiently in the capacity of postmaster of Mountainview, and is still the incumbent of that office. Mr. Taylor’s father, Samuel P. Taylor, was born and reared in Kentucky and came to California in 1853, crossing the plains with ox teams. After a six months’ journey he located near Mountainview, at what is now called Old Mountainview, and engaged in general merchandising. He carried on a successful business there and ran a hotel in connection with his store until his death in 1875, when about sixty-five years old. Before leaving Kentucky he was united in marriage with Miss Letitia Kifer, a native of Tennessee, who bore her husband three sons and three daughters, and who also died in California.

The youngest of this family of six children, George G. Taylor, was born September 5, 1867. After receiving his education in the common schools of California he started out for himself and took a position as manager of his father’s hotel property at Old Mountainview, being thus engaged from 1897 to April 1, 1899, when he received his first appointment as postmaster. His fulfilment of the duties of that office was so satisfactory that he received a second appointment from President McKinley and has been postmaster ever since, having charge of a third class office. While serving in this capacity Mr. Taylor has done excellent work, having started two new rural free delivery routes and August 10, 1903, opened a new office.

Active socially, Mr. Taylor is a member of the Mountainview Cyclist Club and also of the board of trade, while as a politician he stands firmly by the Republican party, which he supports by vote and influence. Having often been a delegate to both county and state conventions, Mr. Taylor once officiated on the state central committee and has done much to further the interests of his party and his community. His home in Mountainview is made bright by the presence of his wife and little son, Clarence Grant. Mrs. Taylor is a native of San Jose, Cal., and was before marriage Miss Clara Halsey.
