ST. JOSEPH’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
ST. JOSEPH’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mountainview
was erected in 1868 by Rev. Joseph Bixio, S. J.
The land for the building site was donated by an old and respected citizen of
San Francisco, the late John Sullivan. He was the generous donor, also, of
the site upon which stands the old Cathedral of San Francisco, now in charge of
the Paulist Fathers. His first wife’s remains rest
under the high altar of that sacred edifice.
The church at Mountainview
remained in charge of the Jesuits from its inception up to 1901, when the
present pastor, Rev. John J. Cullen, was appointed. In 1902 a
parochial residence was erected, and in the autumn of 1904 ground was broken
for a new brick structure to replace the old building of the '60s.
A brother of Father John J. Cullen, the Rev. Andrew J.
Cullen was one of the pioneer priests of the diocese and is well remembered by
the old residents of the state for the valuable services he rendered to the
cause of religion. His useful career was cut short at the age of forty-three.
His death occurred in Pasadena, July 23, 1890.
