ASSOCIATE JUSTICE JOHN WESLEY SHENK

 

 

Associate Justice John Wesley Shenk was born in Shelburne, Vermont, on February 7, 1875; son of Reverend John Wesley and Susanna Cake (Brooks) Shenk.

            He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, 1900; J.D. University of Michigan, 1903; LL.D. Ohio Wesleyan University, 1930. He was admitted to the California bar in 1903, practicing in Los Angeles; deputy and assistant city attorney, Los Angeles, 1906-10; city attorney, 1910-13; Judge of the Superior Court, Los Angeles, 1913-24; Justice of the Supreme Court, 1924 to date; present term expires 1955.

            He is a member of the American Bar Association; Bar Association of Los Angeles County; Bar Association of San Francisco; Order of Coif; Masonic and other fraternal organizations; Spanish American War Veteran.

            He married Lena R. Custer on June 29, 1907. They have two sons, Samuel Custer, John Wesley III.
