CHARLES CADDEN REED

In the industrial ranks of San Jose no one holds a more assured position than Charles Cadden Reed, a man of exceptional mechanical ability and an expert engineer.  Energetic, persevering, and well endowed physically, mentally and morally, he is held in high estimation as a man and as a citizen.  A native of San Jose, he was born February 6, 1848, a son of James F. Reed, and comes of excellent Scotch-Irish stock.  Further particulars of his parentage and ancestry may be found elsewhere in this biographical work, in connection with the sketch of his sister, Mrs. Virginia (Reed) Murphy.

Brought up and educated in San Jose, Charles Cadden Reed began life for himself as an agriculturist, being employed in cattle and sheep raising at Yagers creek, where he had three thousand acres of land.  Disposing of that property, he was for awhile engaged in general farming, including grain raising, in Santa Clara county.  Retiring from his agricultural labors in 1880, Mr. Reed accepted a position as stationary engineer with the San Jose Electric Improvement company, and for twelve years had charge of five of their engines.  Leaving that company in 1892, he has since been successfully engaged as a stationary engineer in different places, and is now manager of traction engines, and stationary engineer, in orchards.  His complete knowledge of the construction, mechanism and handling of engines renders him especially qualified for his responsible position, and his services are in much demand.  He lives at No. 334 West San Salvador, where he owns a fine residence, conveniently arranges, and furnished with modern improvements.

In San Jose Mr. Reed married Imogene Bergler, who was born in Monterey, Cal., a daughter of the late Louis and Martha A. (Wicks) Bergler.  A more complete history of her parents and ancestors may be found in connection with the sketch of her mother, Mrs. Martha A. Bergler, on another page of this volume.  Mr. and Mrs. Reed have four children, namely:  Charles Cadden, Jr., of Siskiyou county; Mrs. Nellie Hillrath, of Watsonville; Frazier O., a resident of Siskiyou county, and Imogene.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Reed are members of the Santa Clara County Pioneers' Society.  Mr. Reed is a member of the San Jose Local Union, No. 171, International Union Stationary Engineers.  In his political affiliations he is a straight-forward Democrat, sustaining the principles of his party at all times.
