JOHN PATTERSON
JOHN PATTERSON. The work of landscape gardening has been
carried on by John Patterson for a number of years with a success which
has brought him a competence. Not a native of the state nor yet of the country
wherein he has made his home for so many years, Mr. Patterson has brought
with him from Scottish scenes, where he was born in Aberdeenshire
August 28, 1849, the qualities which distinguish the citizens of that
country, adding to them, by long association whatever worth goes to make up the
character of an American citizen. Both parents, John and Jessie (Pheamister) Patterson, owed their nativity to the same
locality, and both passed away in the land of their birth. The father being a
landscape gardener, his son, John, who was the third in a family of six sons
and three daughters, was early instructed in the art. After acquiring his
education in the common schools of the country he was apprenticed to learn the
work, and after serving his time he came to the United States. In 1872 he
located in California, making his home in San Mateo county,
where he worked at his trade for two years, after which he went to San
Francisco and engaged in the same business for thirteen years. In 1887 he came
to Santa Clara county and worked for
W. W. Montague, remaining in his employ until 1897, when he came to
his present location, a farm of thirty acres on the Homestead road, two and a
half miles west of Santa Clara. This property is now devoted to the cultivation
of prunes, apricots and peaches, ten acres being given to each fruit.
Mr. Patterson has met with success in his work and is known throughout the
community as a man of energy and ability.
In San Francisco Mr. Patterson was united in
marriage with Marguerite Meston, also a native
of Scotland. They are members of the Presbyterian Church. Politically
Mr. Patterson adheres to the principles advocated in the platform of the
Republican party.
