HENRY LUX
HENRY LUX. Conspicuous among the pioneers of California
was the late Henry Lux, who, for nearly half a
century was one of the most active and prosperous business men of San Jose.
Enterprising, far-sighted, and of keen perceptive faculties, he was
successfully engaged in various lines of industry, and by thrift and ability
accumulated a large property, becoming one of the most extensive land owners of
Santa Clara county. He was born February 26, 1832, in Alsace, near Hatten, France, and died July 13, 1902, at his
home, on Alum Rock avenue, San Jose, Cal.
Brought up in Alsace, France, where his parents owned
considerable real estate, Henry Lux remained at
home until fifteen years of age. Emigrating then to
America, he located in New York City, where he learned the butcher’s trade.
Coming from there to the Pacific coast when nineteen years old, he arrived in
San Francisco March 4, 1851, and was there employed in the butcher
business with his brother Charles for a short time. Subsequently he came to San
Jose and opened a retail meat market, which he managed with success for a
number of years. After selling his business in San Jose, Mr. Lux devoted his entire attention for many years to the
affairs of the Miller-Lux Company, being one of the
directors. Politically Mr. Lux was a true blue
Republican, and fraternally he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd
Fellows. He was a man of high moral principles, and a consistent member of the
Lutheran Church.
Mr. Lux married Ellen Lux, who, although bearing the same surname, was not a
relative of his, coming from a different family. She was born in New York City,
and died June 23, 1901, in San Jose, Cal. Of the six children born of
the union of Mr. and Mrs. Lux, three are
now living: Charles Henry, of San Francisco; Lizzie, wife of
F. S. Pott, of San Francisco; and Lena,
wife of C. G. H. MacBride of San Jose.
