JOSEPH T. GREEN
To Joseph T. Green belongs the distinction of
having one of the finest fruit ranches in the vicinity of Morgan Hill, Santa
Clara county, his land being well located among the
foothills in the frostless belt. Although a resident of this state since 1886,
it was not until 1895 that Mr. Green purchased twenty-four acres, two and a
half miles northeast of Morgan Hill and here he has spent the intervening
years. He has ten acres in fine bearing prune and apricot trees, two acres in
berries, three acres in young assorted fruit trees, and the balance of his land
is used in raising hay and in pasture.
September 18, 1856, Joseph T. Green
was born at Providence, R. I., a son of Thomas and Bridget (Fitzgerald) Green,
the former born in Manchester, England, and the latter on Long Island. The
elder Green immigrated to the United States at an early day, settling in Rhode
Island in 1826. By occupation he was a steel engraver, and after following his
trade in that state for about twelve years he moved to the vicinity of
Milwaukee, Wis., and took up farm pursuits. He is now
living a retired life in the above named city, where the death of Mrs. Green
took place some time since. Four sons and one daughter were born to Mr. and Mrs.
Green, Joseph T. being the youngest son and the youngest child but one in the
family. He obtained a meagre education in the common schools of Wisconsin, and
when of suitable age engaged in ranching pursuits in the same state. Being
ambitious to attain success, Mr. Green, in looking about for a suitable place
to locate, very naturally turned toward the west. In 1886 he went to Montana,
and a little later explored Yellowstone Park for a few months, lumbering in the
woods, but before the close of the year he pushed on to California, locating in
Los Angeles. For some time afterward he traveled over various parts of the
state, but in 1895 he purchased a ranch and took up the double occupation of
farming and orcharding an occupation he still
follows.
The marriage of Mr. Green took place
in Los Gatos, Cal., and united him with Miss Mary C. Robar, formerly of
Lebanon, Pa. One daughter Agnes M., brightens the home. By his honorable and
straightforward methods, Mr. Green has not only won the esteem of his neighbors,
but has endeared himself to all with whom he comes in contact, and is regarded
as one of the mainstays of the community in which he lives. Politically he
favors the Socialist party, but is not a politician.
