EDWARD ELIZUR GOODRICH
Edward Elizur
Goodrich, proprietor of “El Quito,” an olive and vine farm, beautifully located
about five miles south of Santa Clara, was born in Malden, Mass., August 12,
1845. He prepared for college at the Hopkins Grammar School, New Haven, Conn.,
was graduated from the Academical (sic) department of
Yale College in the class of 1866, and from the Albany Law School in 1867. He
subsequently continued his law studies at the Columbia Law School, and in the
office of Messrs. Marsh, Coe & Wallis, of New York City. He passed the
years intervening between 1868 and 1878 in part at the family home in New
Haven, Conn., and in part in travel, in 1869 visiting California.
On April 23, 1878, in Boston, Mass.,
Mr. Goodrich married Sarah M., daughter of the late Hon. O. L. Shafter, of
Oakland, Cal. He resided in Florence, Italy, from 1878 until 1882, when he
purchased the property now known as the “El Quito” olive and vine farm. From
that time until 1891 he spent a portion of his time on his newly acquired farm,
and a portion of it abroad, with his family. Since 1891 he has resided at “El
Quito.” Mr. and Mrs. Goodrich had the following children: Florence Shafter,
born in Florence, Italy, March 22, 1879, died in Pistoja,
Italy, June 15, 1881; Bertha Shafter, born in Abetone,
Italy, July 11, 1880; Chauncey Shafter, born in Florence, Italy, September 19,
1881; Elizabeth Ely, born in Florence, Italy, October 14, 1885, and Frances
Juliana Webster, born in Lausanne, Switzerland, May 18, 1887. Mr. Goodrich is a
member of Liberty Lodge, F. & A. M., Santa Clara; Santa Clara Club, San
Jose; University Club, of San Francisco; University Club and Yale Club, of New
York City, and Order of Founders and Patriots.
