GEORGE D. GILMAN, A. B.
GEORGE D. GILMAN, A. B.
A man of marked ability and enterprise, George D. Gilman is
filling the position of manager for the Phoenix Dried Fruit Company with efficiency,
and discharging the duties incumbent upon him in such a way as to win the
commendation of his employers. In addition to the qualities with which nature
endowed him, Mr. Gilman has had a thorough business training as well as a
groundwork of education which would well equip him for either the actual
discharge of duty or the study of plans and details that others might execute.
Born in Minneapolis, Minn., October 29, 1872,
George D. Gilman was the eldest of two children born to his parents.
His father, J. F. Gilman, was an early settler in Minnesota from
Shirley, Me. He engaged in farming on property which now adjoins the city
limits, remaining in that location until 1886, when he brought his family to
California and located with them in Santa Clara county. He bought an orchard in
the Willows district, now owning twenty acres on Lincoln avenue.
His wife was formerly Jane Gilmore, a native of New Hampshire and whose
father was an early settler of Minnesota and later a resident of Iowa. The
early education of George D. Gilman was received in the public
schools of Minnesota, and later he entered the academy of the University of the
Pacific and prepared for college. He first completed the business course, after
which, in 1890, he entered as a freshman and graduated four years later with
the degree of A. B. His first independent work was as foreman of a
warehouse in San Jose, where he received fruit for Griffin & Skelley Company. In 1896 he accepted the position of
manager for the Willow Glen Fruit Union, a drying and packing company, and
remained so occupied until 1900. He then entered the employ of the California
Cured Fruit Association as head inspector, having charge of the fruit received
all over the state. In 1901 he resigned to accept his present position with the
Phoenix Dried Fruit Company, and has now been in their service over three
years. They are extensively engaged in the buying, packing and shipping
business, and are one of the noticeably successful firms of San Jose.
In San Jose Mr. Gilman was united in marriage with
May Bell, who was born in Iowa. She also graduated from the University of
the Pacific in 1894 with the degree of A. B. Born of this union are three
children, namely: Maude, Edith and Ralph. Mr. and Mrs. Gilman are members
of the First Methodist Episcopal Church.
