EUGENE AVVENTINO FILIPELLO, M. D. Prominent among the
more successful physicians and surgeons of Santa Clara county
is Eugene A. Filipello, M. D., who is
meeting with distinguished success in his professional career. Talented,
cultured and skilful, with a singular force of will and a strong personality,
he inspires confidence in his patients, and invariably wins the regard and
esteem of all with whom he comes in contact. A native of Italy, he was born
November 2, 1868, in the province of Turin, Italy, which was also the
birthplace of his father, Lawrence Filipello.
Inheriting the farm, in Castelnuovo
d’ Asti, on which his ancestors had lived for many generations, Lawrence Filipello was there engaged in agricultural pursuits during
his brief life, which was brought to a close in December, 1868, when his son
Eugene was but little more than one month old. He married Anna Musso, who was born in the province of Turin, the daughter
of John Musso, a civil engineer and surveyor,
and the representative of a family prominent and active in professional and
military circles. She survived her husband, and now lives on the home estate.
Of the three sons and two daughters born of their union, all are living with
the exception of one daughter, Eugene being the youngest child. One other son,
Alexander, is a resident of San Jose.
At the age of eleven years Eugene A. Filipello
left home to enter the college at Scarnafigi, where
he studied the classics, completing the gymnasium course, after which he took a
full course of study at the Turin Lyceum. Subsequently beginning the study of
medicine, he entered the Royal University of Turin in 1888, and in 1894 was
graduated from that institution with the degree of M. D. The three
previous years, from 1891 until 1894, he was interne at Hospital Humberto I, securing the appointment by competitive
examination. After his graduation Dr. Filipello
entered the military service as private, was immediately made surgeon, with
rank of lieutenant, and at the end of a year, October 15, 1895, was
honorably discharged from the army. Four days later,
October 19, 1895, he started for the New World. Arriving in
California, he located in San Jose, where he has since been prosperously
employed in the practice of medicine and surgery, having an extensive and
lucrative patronage. Returning to Italy in 1904, he further pursued his studies
in the University of Turin. Dr. Filipello is an
influential member of the leading medical organizations of the Pacific coast,
belonging to the Santa Clara Medical Society, the State Medical Society and the
American Medical Association.
