NYE L. FARLEY
NYE L. FARLEY. Through his connection with the Pacific
Manufacturing Company as foreman of the finishing department, Nye L. Farley is
identified with one of the enterprises contributing to the commercial progress
and material growth of the city of Santa Clara.
His father, H. D., was also at one time associated with the same
industry, but that was many years ago when the business was in its infancy and
the town a mere hamlet. Descended from
an old eastern family, H. D. Farley was born in Elmira, N. Y., and during
boyhood learned the trade of a cabinet-maker.
Like many other young men of his day, he was impelled to seek a
livelihood in the far west, where conditions seemed more favorable for success
than in the older settled east. Coming
to California via Panama in 1858, he took up mining on the Yuba river and made his headquarters at Smartville,
Yuba county. For some time he had charge
of the mines of J. P. Pierce, for whom he acted both as millwright and
superintendent. After his removal to
Santa Clara in 1879 he was employed as superintendent of the coffin department
of the Pacific Manufacturing Company and continued in that capacity until his
retirement five years later. At the time
of his death, which occurred in San Jose, he had reached the age of
seventy-eight years. His wife, Phoebe
Baldwin, was born in Elmira, N. Y., and died in San Jose. Of their nine children the following attained
mature years: Almond J.; Nettie, wife of T. W. Corder,
of Oakland; Gussie, who married Judge J. E. Glendenning, of
Santa Clara; Rose, who died in San Jose; and Nye L., of Santa Clara.
While the family
were making their home at Smartville, Yuba
county, Nye L. Farley was born November 3, 1866, and his primary education was
obtained in its schools. After coming to
Santa Clara in 1879 he completed the studies of the grammar school.
The marriage of Mr. Farley, at
Saratoga, Santa Clara county, June 15, 1902, united
him with Miss Georgia Andrews, who was born in Napa county, and came to this
part of the state with her father, George H. Andrews, now a retired farmer of
Santa Clara. In religion she is
connected with the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Farley believes in Republican principles and always votes with the
party. Active in Masonic affairs, he was
made a Mason in Liberty Lodge No. 299, F. & A. M., at Santa Clara, and is
also identified with Howard Chapter No. 14, R. A. M., at San Jose, and San Jose
Commandery No. 10, K. T. Movements for
the benefit of his home town receive his cordial support and enthusiastic
encouragement, and he is always depended upon to give his influence to such as are indisputably needed to advance the upbuilding of the
community.
