ROYAL COTTLE
In the list of pioneer families of Santa Clara county none is more honored than that represented by Royal
Cottle, the owner of an attractive and valuable homestead on Lincoln avenue,
San Jose and a native of Santa Clara county, born November 13, 1858. He was the
youngest among the seven children of Royal Cottle, Sr., of whom three sons and
two daughters attained mature years. From early boyhood he has been familiar
with the fruit industry. When the time came for him to select an occupation in
life, naturally he chose the one with which he was the most familiar and toward
which his tastes inclined. More fortunate than many, he was generously aided by
his father, who helped each child to get a start and promoted their success in
every way possible.
At this writing Mr. Cottle owns a
prune orchard of thirty-two acres, to the care of which he gives much time and
thought, seeking to secure the largest returns possible from the trees. The
value of his property is enhanced by a substantial residence, erected in 1882,
and remodeled in 1895. Here, with his wife and their two sons, Everett R. and
Ralph W., he has a comfortable and happy home, where relatives and friends
receive a hospitable welcome, while to strangers is extended the courtesy that
is an unfailing indication of the highest refinement. Mrs. Cottle was formerly
Miss Anna Handlos, and was born in New York, being a
daughter of Joseph Handlos, a German, who crossed the
ocean to the United States and settled in the east, remaining for a time in New
York and Cleveland, Ohio, thence coming to California in 1873 and engaging in
the manufacturing business in San Francisco.
No one has shown a more constant
interest in the advancement of Santa Clara county than has Mr. Cottle, who, as
a native son and a continuous resident, cherishes a deep regard of the
locality. Movements to advance the local prosperity and develop local resources
find in him a generous assistant. While he is not a politician, he always
supports Republican principles and is a stanch adherent of the party.
