DR. HENRY CASE

DR. HENRY CASE. One whose whole energies have been enlisted in whatever enterprises have occupied his attention, it is a matter of small wonder that Dr. Henry Case has acquired success in his profession, as well as won for himself an enviable place in the estimation of all who know him. He is now practically retired from the active cares of life although he still gives his attention to several patients who have had his services for many years, and is also a valuable aid in consultation. Thoroughly in sympathy with every movement which has for its end the upbuilding and development of the resources of Santa Clara county and the city of San Jose, the doctor has invested quite extensively in real estate operations, having bought and sold considerable land in the past fifteen years, and is numbered among the capitalists who have contributed much to the progress of the community.

Born in Geauga county, Ohio, January 21, 1841, Dr. Henry Case was the son of Albert Case, a farmer in that locality, where the years of his boyhood and young manhood were spent. Alternating an attendance at the public schools with his home duties, he acquired a common school education which was but the foundation for that which he hoped to rear in his future life. Eager to take up the profession which time has proved him so well adapted for, he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and graduated with honors in 1865. In the meantime he had chosen his location and going to Saginaw, Mich., he began his practice, necessarily beginning at the foot of the ladder, but by perseverance and energy, coupled with his native ability, he rose rapidly and attained a position which ranked him with the first physicians and surgeons of his community. When he located in that section he was a pioneer, the land all about him being heavily timbered; when he left to make another home in a more remote west the lands were all cleared and utilized for agricultural purposes entirely. It is needless to say that the doctor was an important factor in the movements which resulted in the development of one of the most productive parts of Michigan. In 1886 he decided to spend the balance of his years in a milder climate, and selecting California as a possible location he came west in the spring of that year and after visiting various parts of the state chose San Jose as his place of residence. Purchasing land at No. 817 South Third street he erected a beautiful home, since remodeling it and also putting up an office near his residence. Amply able to pass his years in retirement, he was of too energetic a temperament to do so, preferring to build up a practice which he sustained for a number of years. In addition to this he has also given his personal attention to the loaning of money on properties of Santa Clara county and San Jose, making his influence felt in whatever direction he bent his efforts.

In early manhood the doctor married Ellen Doyle, who is a native of Canada. While a resident of Michigan Dr. Case became a member of the Masonic order and has retained his interests to the present time.
