EDWARD CAREY

EDWARD CAREY.  A prominent and successful young orchardist of Santa Clara county, located in the vicinity of San Jose, is Edward Carey, representative of one of the first families of the middle west.  He was born in Macon county, Ill., in August, 1871, a son of Hon. John B. Carey.  The latter, a native of Ireland, came to the United States and located in Cleveland, Ohio, where he engaged as a farmer and stockman.  In time he removed to Macon county, Ill., and there continued his old occupation, in 1874 locating in Wichita, Kans.  With a firm faith in the future of that city he invested largely in property and gave his best efforts toward the development of natural resources.  With the passage of years he laid out a sixty-acre addition to Wichita, now a finely built up portion of the city, and erected the well-known Carey house, which was one of the largest and finest in the state.  Upon locating in Wichita he engaged in the retail lumber business and in time organized and incorporated the Carey Lumber Company, of which he served as president.  He also established twenty-two lumber yards in different cities in southern Kansas, in the counties of Sedgwick, Sumner, Harper, Kingman and Kiowa.  In addition to his business interests he also owned a large stock ranch in Kingman county.  Through his personal characteristics as well as his extensive business interests, Mr. Carey became very prominent in Wichita, being elected mayor of the city on the Democratic ticket, an evidence of his popularity lying in the fact that the city is strongly Republican.  He also served one term as a member of the state legislature.  He was president of the Kansas State Bank of Wichita, and in every possible way assisted in the promotion of worthy enterprises and the upbuilding of the city’s best interests.  Deciding to locate in California, Mr. Carey came to Santa Rosa in 1887 and remained a resident of that city three years, when he removed to San Jose.  He early assumed a prominent position in local affairs in this city, shortly after his location here laying out an addition to East San Jose now known as the Carey estate tract.  He became a well-known and much-esteemed citizen, and his death in 1899 removed from the community a man of sterling qualities.  Fraternally he was a Mason.  His widow now makes her home in Wichita, Kans.

Edward Carey received his education in the public and high schools of Santa Rosa, where he accompanied his parents in 1887.  Upon locating in San Jose he attended the Santa Clara College and completed his education, after which he engaged in the real estate business in partnership with W. S. Tureman as his first independent operations.  This business was continued, however, for only a short time, when Mr. Carey became interested in the orchard business.  He is now cultivating thirty-five acres on the Fleming road, five miles east of San Jose, upon which property is located a dryer and packing house.  A man of energy and perseverance, he is making a success of his work and becoming well known as a prominent orchardist of this section.  His place is well-improved and thoroughly equipped for his line of work.

In San Jose Mr. Carey was married to Kate Lee Tureman, who was born in San Francisco, a daughter of W. S. and Nancy E. (Foxworthy) Tureman, the latter of whom is now deceased.  Mr. Tureman was engaged in the mercantile business in Williamsburg, Callaway county, Mo., in which county both himself and his wife were born.  In 1870 he came to San Jose and engaged in the same business until 1899, in which year he sold out and has since given his attention entirely to real estate operations.  In his political affiliations Mr. Carey follows the example of his father and is prominent in the counsels of the Democratic party, now acting as a member of the Democratic State Central Committee.
