DR. HOWARD BLACK
Although but a few years have passed since
locating in the state, Dr. Howard Black has successfully established himself in
a lucrative and far-reaching practice of his profession in and about Palo Alto,
and has made many friends who respect and esteem him for his admirable personal
characteristics. Born in Delaware county, Ohio,
September 6, 1872, he is the son of Frank Black, a native of the same locality.
Frank Black has been a farmer all his life until his retirement from active
duty, now making his home near Galena of his native state. During the Civil war he served as second
lieutenant in Company H, One Hundred and Thirty-second Ohio Regiment. His wife,
formerly Helen Post of New York, is also living, and of the four sons born to
them three now survive.
The second son of his father’s
family, Howard Black was reared to young manhood in his native state, receiving
the best of educational advantages. He attended the common schools up to 1889,
when he entered Wesleyan College and took a two years’ course, following this
with a course in the Ohio State University during the years 1891-93. Entering
Starling Medical College at Columbus, Ohio, he studied medicine, graduating
from this institution with the degree of M. D. in 1896. His first professional
work was as interne at St. Francis Hospital in 1896, and the following year he
was promoted to the position of assistant surgeon. He continued in the position
until taking up a course of lectures on chemistry which he delivered for two
years. In 1899 he came to California on a leave of absence granted on account
of his health and after traveling six months throughout various portions of the
state was so impressed with its possibilities and climatic conditions, that he
decided to locate permanently in Palo Alto. Since that time he has given his
attention entirely to a general practice of his profession, by his ability
establishing himself firmly in the esteem of the public. Always a student and
intensely progressive especially in regard to his work, he has taken several
port-graduate courses, in 1902 attending the Polyclinic in New York and the
Johns Hopkins University; in the year following taking a course in Chicago, and
in 1904 spending three months in New York City and Philadelphia. Both his
office and residence are located at No. 627 University avenue.
In October, 1901, in San Francisco,
Dr. Black was united in marriage with Agnes Whitney, a native of Oberlin, Ohio,
and they have one son, Walter. Dr. Black is a Republican and fraternally is a
member of San Jose Lodge No. 522, B. P. O. E.; Palo Alto Lodge No. 209, K. P.;
and Sagamore Lodge No. 112, Red Men.
