FRANK A. ALLEN
FRANK A. ALLEN. As a keen and progressive orchardist of
Santa Clara county, Cal., who has made a splendid
record for successful work, Mr. Allen is an honor alike to his township and
his county as a representative of the best class of citizens. Born in Madison county, N. Y., November 10, 1855, he is the
youngest child of the family and was educated in the common schools of his
native state. It was in 1872 that Mr. Allen became a resident of
California together with his parents, and for some time after settling in this
state he continued to remain at home and assisted his father in farm pursuits
and later in the saw-milling business for two seasons at Bar River mill.
Together the father and son subsequently purchased a
place on Stevens Creek road. This place was known as the old Bailey place and
contained twenty acres, and after carrying on farm pursuits here together for a
couple of years Mr. Allen married in 1883 and the property was divided,
the son taking nine acres and upon this he built a nice residence three miles
west of San Jose, on the Stevens Creek road. Here for a time he engaged in the
orchard business, having previously planted prunes and apricots principally.
Before the close of the year 1883, however, he sold this place to
Mr. Clarkson and in partnership with a brother he purchased the place upon
which he still resides. The original purchase contained one hundred and forty
acres, and some time afterward the land was divided and of this tract
Mr. Allen now owns ten acres, all devoted to fruit culture, two acres
being in prunes and several in apricots. Upon this place Mr. Allen built a
neat modern cottage and his place is well improved.
By his marriage in San Jose he was united with Miss Viola
Markham, who was born in Oregon, and three children now bless their union,
Della, Alice and Marian. Politically Mr. Allen is identified with the
Republican party, whose principles he believes to be
the best of any existing political organization. He has served not only his
favorite party, but also his section of the county well as roadmaster
for four years and as overseer of roads for two years. Socially, he is allied
with the Fraternal Aid Society.
