MARTIN I. WELSH
One of the notable figures in
the public life of the Sacramento Valley
is Martin I. Welsh, who is now engaged in the practice of law in the capital
city, and who has been superior judge of Sacramento
county, mayor of Sacramento,
and deputy district attorney. Judge Welsh's conduct of his official
duties has been characterized by unquestioned integrity and by efficient
discharge of the tasks entrusted to him, all being performed in a manner most
satisfactory to his fellow citizens.
Martin I. Welsh was born in San
Jose, California, October 1, 1882, a son of Garrett and
Mary (Connelly) Welsh. The father was a pioneer of Santa
Clara county, California,
where he came in 1851, the journey having been made by way of the Isthmus
of Panama. He was married at Santa Clara.
Martin I. Welsh attended the
public schools and then pursued his higher studies at St.
Joseph's College, and at St. Vincent's
College at Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
His education was interrupted, however, by the death of his father, and he
returned to San Jose to go to work.
At first he undertook the study of law privately, and in 1912 successfully
passed the bar examinations and was admitted to practice in the courts of California.
He began active practice in the city of Sacramento,
and was judge of the superior court here for a term. He was also deputy
district attorney under E. S. Wachhorst. He served as
city councilman of Sacramento from January 1, 1928, to December 31, 1929, and as mayor from
September 27, 1928, to December 31, 1929, and was the
nominee on the democratic state ticket for the office
of lieutenant-governor of California.
Judge Welsh is a member of the
State and County Bar Associations. In politics he is nominally a democrat,
although he exercises his right to think independently on political matters,
and he is ex-grand sachem of the Iroquois Clubs of California, a democratic
organization. He was married to Miss Marie E. Eubanks of Santa
Clara county, California,
August 15, 1903, and is the
father of Elynor Jane, Mildred Faye and Marie Ellen
Walsh.
