CHARLES W. PAINE
CHARLES W. PAINE.
One of the leading business men of Sacramento
is Charles W. Paine, proprietor of the Fashion stables, the most thoroughly
equipped livery of the city. He is a
native of the state, his birth having occurred in Sacramento
in 1863, his parents, Charles E. and Harriet E. (Wingate) Paine, being pioneers
of the Pacific coast. His father, who
was for some years engaged in the livery business, is now living in the city,
retired from active duties. Mr. Paine
received his education in the public and high schools of Sacramento,
after which he engaged in the same business pursued by his father. His stables, which are located on K
street, with a frontage
of sixty feet and a depth of one hundred and sixty feet, were built over forty
years ago, and are still in excellent condition. His outfit is complete in every detail,
including hacks, buggies, barouches, carryalls, carriages, tallyhos and victorias for picnics and outings in general. Some of these vehicles accommodate twenty
people, and are drawn by four or six horses.
All vehicles are equipped with rubber tires, while his harness is new
and of the latest make. He furnished the
principal rigs for the May Queen Street Carnival in 1903 and 1904.
Mr. Paine
was married in 1887 to Laura Plant, of Santa Cruz,
Cal., and they
became the parents of two children, Edward P. and Charles Tevis. Mr. Paine is a member of the Native Sons of
the Golden West, also of Lodge No. 328, B. P. O. E., of Sacramento. For four years he served as a member of the
City Board of Trustees, being elected in 1897.
He is also a member and director of the State Board of Agriculture to
which he was appointed by Governor Gage in 1901. In politics he is a Republican, taking an
active part in the success of his party and the election of his friends.
