Biographies
ROYAL MILLER
Royal Miller, president of Miller Automobile Company, was born in San Francisco, California, on December 5, 1884. He is the son of Charles E. and Louise M. (Knowlton) Miller.
After graduating from the Berkeley (California) High School, Mr. Miller began his career in 1906 in association with the Pacific Tool & Supply Company in San Francisco; then with the Phoenix Tool & Valve Company of San Francisco, 1909 to 1911. In 1912 he founded the Miller Coffing Automobile Company (Ford dealers) in Sacramento, California. In 1914 he took over the Dodge agency under the name of the Miller Automobile Company, Sacramento, and by 1927 he was distributor of Dodge cars throughout the Sacramento Valley, having branches in Chico, Woodland, Redding, Yreka and Mt. Shasta City, and he is still president of the company. In 1929 he sold all branches of the company and established the W. W. Shipley Company, Dodge distributor in Portland, Oregon, but in 1939 he sold his Portland agency.
Mr. Miller was elected director, and later became president, of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, which office he still holds. This District distributes electric power to about three fourths of Sacramento County, California . In 1946 he was appointed, by Governor Warren, as a member of the California State Water Resources Board and became the first president of same.
He is a member of the Society of California Pioneers; Ben Ali Shrine; Jesters Court 119 (charter member); Sutter Club, Del Paso Country Club (charter member), Grandfather’s Club (charter member); and American Legion.
Mr. Miller married Irene L. Hamblin of Berkeley, California, in 1909 (deceased, 1938); children: Margaret Ruth (Mrs. Yeates; mother of four sons), Charles H. Miller, and Royal Miller, Jr. (father of one son and one daughter). In 1939, Mr. Miller married (2d) Marion N. Robbins of San Francisco, California. Their home is at 1325 Forty-fifth Street, Sacramento, California.
