ANDREW M. McCOLLUM
ANDREW M. McCOLLUM, a well-known
veterinary surgeon, has been a resident of Sacramento, Cal., for more than
a quarter of a century. Born June 3,
1851, in Canada, he is a son of Robert C.
McCollum, who was a farmer in Ontario, Canada. During his boyhood Andrew attended the public
schools in the vicinity of his Canadian home, and later added to the knowledge
he gained by attending the Upper Canada College in Toronto. Returning to the paternal home-stead, he
assisted his father on the farm for a time, after which he began the study of
veterinary medicine under the direction of Prof. Andrew Smith, of Toronto, principal of
the Ontario Veterinary College.
After his graduation
from the college in the spring of 1875 Dr. McCollum commenced the practice of
his profession at Stratford, Canada, and two years
later came to the United States. Coming to Sacramento, he operated an
office for the practice of his profession and met with success from the start,
his thorough under-standing of his profession winning him a large
patronage. In 1882 he took charge of the
veterinary department of the Haggin ranch otherwise known as the Rancho del
Pasa, which is celebrated throughout the civilized world for the fine
thoroughbred race horse raised there.
Many of the most noted race horses of the last quarter of a century have
been bred and raised on the famous Rancho del Paso. In addition to his duties on the ranch Dr.
McCollum has an extensive practice.
He has a comfortable
and commodious home in Sacramento, which is
presided over by his wife, who in maidenhood was Nellie J. Ryan of Sacramento. In the line of his profession the doctor is
identified with a number of organizations, being a member of the State
Veterinary Medical Association, and for a number of years past has held the
appointment of live-stock inspector in Sacramento county.
