ELIJAH CARSON HART

The long and useful career of Jude Elijah C. Hart, Associate Justice of the District Court of Appeal, Sacramento, has been distinguished by his achievements in public office. He has served as a member of the state judiciary for a period of more than 30 years, and is honored and esteemed for his amply proven ability and unquestioned integrity.

Judge Hart was born in 1858 in what is now the state of Nevada, but moved with his parents to California while still quite young. He received his early educational training in public schools of Colusa, then engaged in the study of law in the office of his brother, Augustus L. Hart, of Sacramento. He was admitted to the bar in 1883, and three years later was elected City Attorney of Sacramento.

In 1888 Judge Hart was elected to the California Assembly, serving until 1892, when he was again elected City Attorney and also elected a member of the State Senate. He first became a member of the state judiciary in 1896, when he was elected Judge of the Superior Court of Sacramento County, being re-elected in 1902. A few months before the close of his second term, he was elected Associate Justice of the District Court of Appeal, to which office he has since been continuously re-elected.

Judge Hart holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California and the Sacramento County Bar Association. He is also a member of the Elks, Knights of Pythias and the Sutter Club.
