Sacramento County
A. R. GALLAWAY, Jr.
A. R.
Gallaway, Jr., secretary and treasurer of the real estate firm of Wright &
Kimbrough, which is one of the pioneer firms in this field in Sacramento, was
born in Colusa county, California, May 29, 1885. His father, who was a native
of Missouri, crossed the plains at an early day and was actively identified
with the pioneer development of California, becoming president of the Christian
College of Colusa county. His wife was a native of Yolo county, California, and
likewise a member of one of the old families of the state.
In his youthful days A. R.
Gallaway, Jr., attended the public schools of Healdsburg, Sonoma county,
California, and later entered the State University at Berkeley, from which he
was graduated with the class of 1907. He acted as manager of athletic
activities in college during the year of 1906 and was a member of the football
team. He also had membership in the Golden Bears, an honor society of the
university, which is indicative of his interest in scholastic work as well as
in the athletic activities of the school.
On the 26th of May, 1907, Mr.
Gallaway entered the employ of the firm of Wright & Kimbrough as a
salesman. During the World war period he was appointed by the United States
government, through the department of labor, as special exemption examiner,
this being separate from the local board, to pass upon the Southern Pacific
Railroad employes who were on duty in northern California. He willingly gave
his time and service in this connection but otherwise has concentrated his
efforts and attention upon business affairs and has made for himself a most
creditable place in commercial and financial circles of the city. Step by step
he has advanced, ever broadening his interests and activities, and he is now
president of the Sacramento Industrial Corporation; vice president of the
College Investment Company, the Voorhies Investment Company, the Sierra
Investment Company and the Wright & Kimbrough Investment Company. For the
last two years prior to its purchase by the Pacific Gas & Electric Company,
Mr. Gallaway was managing director of the Sacramento Natural Gas Company, which
was organized forty years ago. He is a man of keen business insight and his
judgment has constituted a vital force in the successful management of many
interests. It is said that every man has a hobby and Mr. Gallaway's is that of
owning Kentucky thoroughbred horses, which he has exhibited at the horse shows
of the state during the past four years. He owns ranches in Sonoma, Colusa,
Yolo, Sutter and Sacramento counties and today is regarded as one of the
foremost business men of this part of the state.
Mr. Gallaway was married in
1908 to Miss Lilla Ware, a native of Santa Rosa, California, and they have two
children, Alfred Russell and Lilla Rita. Mr. Gallaway belongs to the Del Paso
Country Club, to Sutter Club, to Sacramento Lodge, No. 6, B. P. O. E., and to
the Masonic fraternity, and has membership in Ben Ali Temple of the Mystic
Shrine. He is likewise connected with the Rotary Club and is in full sympathy
with its ideal of "Service before self." The Sacramento Board of
Education finds in him a worthy representative, as is indicated in the fact
that he has been chosen to serve as its president, and therefore is active in
the guidance of the city schools. His labors are comprehensive in scope and
fruitful in valuable results.
