ARNOLD, J. T., lives on Grand Island, and three miles up
the river from Walnut Grove, his Post Office; was born in Virginia, in 1846,
and lived there until 1870; he came to California in that year, and was engaged
in farming and teaming in Solano County until 1873; he then settled on Grand
Island, and farmed for five years in the interior; his experiment, if it may so
be termed, proved a disastrous one, as from four crops put in he harvested only
one. He is now farming near the shore, with hopes of better success.

BATES, J. T., lives three miles from Walnut Grove, which
is his Post Office; was born in Vermont, in 1829, and lived there until 1852;
he came to California in that year, and settled in this county, where he
remained until 1868; he then went to San Luis Obispo, and resided there until
1872, when he returned to this county, and has lived here ever since. Mr. Bates
was married, in 1861, to Miss Louisa Le Moin, a native of Illinois; she died in
1866.

BUTLER, J. H., lives three and a half miles from Isleton,
his Post Office; was born in Kentucky, in 1833, and lived there until 1873,
engaged in farming and milling; he came to California in that year, and settled
in this county, on Andrus Island, where he is now engaged in farming; he owns
nine hundred and forty-two acres of land, worth, with improvements, about
$30,000. Mr. Butler was married, in 1865, to Miss Ella Sneed, a native of North
Carolina; she died in 1868; he has one child---a son.

CREW, PLEASANT, lives thirty miles from Sacramento City,
at Walnut Grove, his Post Office, where he owns three hundred and eleven acres
of land. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1826, and came to California
in 1856, where he spent one year in the mines. He settled on the Sacramento
River in 1858; he has five thousand bearing fruit trees, consisting of all the
choice varieties, and a hundred acres of alfalfa, from which he cuts three or
four crops per year; in 1878, he had three acres that yielded four crops of hay
and one of seed; his land, with improvements, is valued at $30,000. He was
married, in 1860, to Miss Julia Pratt, a native of St. Louis, Missouri; they
have two boys and one girl; his children are rosy and healthy, one of the boys,
fifteen years old, weighing one hundred and ninety-two pounds. In this spot,
that has been converted into a garden by his hand, and where his family has
grown up around him, Mr. Crew expects to spend the remainder of his life. A

DAVIS, MRS. R. F., lives one and a-half miles up the
river from Isleton, her Post Office; was born in Illinois in 1834; removed to
Tennessee in 1837, and lived there until 1852; she then went to Indiana, and
remained there until 1857. She came to California in that year; owns one
hundred and seven acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $3,000. She
was married in 1858 to R. F. Davis, a
native of Canada, and by whom she has had six children; five of them are
living, three sons and two daughters.

DUBALLD, FRANK; Post Office, Walnut Grove; lives
thirty-three miles from Sacramento, down the river; was born in France in 1826,
and lived there until 1832; he emigrated to the United States in that year, and
lived in New York until 1849; he then moved to Sturgis, Michigan, and remained
there until 1851, when he came to California, and settled in Sacramento County;
he owns two hundred and one acres of land, worth about $12 per acre.

FERGUSON, J. W.; Post Office, Rio Vista, Solano County;
lives on Brannan Island, five miles below Isleton; was born in Kentucky in
1841, and lived there until 1870, engaged in farming. He came to California in
that year, and has lived in this county ever since, where he is now engaged in
farming. Mr. Ferguson owns two hundred and three acres of land, which is worth
about $60 per acre.

FITCH, E. F.; Post Office, Walnut Grove, Sacramento
County; is a native of Ohio. He came to this State in 1856, and settled in
Sacramento County; he owns one hundred and sixty acres of land, and is engaged
in keeping hotel.

FOBES, C. F.; Post Office, Walnut Grove; lives thirty
miles from Sacramento, down the river; was born in Ohio in 1852, and lived
there until 1873, engaged in teaching and farming. He came to California in
that year, and settled in this county; has been engaged in stage-driving and
farming. Mr. Fobes was married in 1878 to Miss Rebecca Callahan, a native of
Nebraska.

GARDINER, P. H., lives in Isleton; was born in New Jersey
in 1846, and lived there until 1867; he came to California in that year, and
was farming in Contra Costa County for about a year. He then went to the State
of Nevada, and engaged in mining until 1870, when he came back to this State,
and followed farming at Rio Vista about a year; he moved then to Isleton, and
continued the business of farming for three years; since then he has been
merchandising, and he is also agent for the California Transportation Company.
Mr. Gardiner was married in 1878 to Miss Ida Pool, a native of this State, and
who has borne him one child, a daughter.

HALL, R. B., lives on Grand Island, seven miles below
Courtland, his Post Office; was born in Rockport, Indiana, in 1825; moved from
there to Kentucky, and lived there until the Mexican War; he served during that
war, and at its close returned to Kentucky. He came to California across the
Plains in 1850, and lived a few years in El Dorado County; he then came to this
county; owns ninety-three acres of land. While in Kentucky Mr. Hall was engaged
in the tannery business; of late years he has followed farming. He was married
in 1864 to Miss E. D. Hawkins, a native of Vermont; they have had born to them
nine children, six of whom are living, one son and five daughters.

HANSON, O., was born in the province of Denmark, from
whence he came to the United States. It was in the year 1868 he first came to
California. He located on his present home at Walnut Grove in 1871; his farm
embraces two hundred and thirty acres of good land, which is well cultivated.

HAZEN, WILLARD; Post Office, Richland; lives twenty-eight
miles from Sacramento; was born in Vermont in 1817; removed to New Hampshire in
1834, and lived there until 1848: he came to California January 1, 1849, and
settled in this county in 1856; living on the river, he lost everything by the
flood of 1862; his brightest hopes were thus blasted, for he was then planning
to marry, having been engaged to his present wife since 1854; in consequence of
this misfortune he did not marry until 1870; the fair one who thus waited
sixteen long years for the one of her choice was Miss H. M. Eastman, also a
native of Vermont. Mr. Hazen owns one hundred and forty acres, worth, with
improvements, $20,000. He is now engaged in farming and fruit-raising.

HOLLTUM, WILLIAM; Post Office, Walnut Grove; was born in
Kent County, England, in 1834, and lived there until 1846; he then went to
Valparaiso, Chile, and followed a sailor's life until 1849, when he came to
California, but remained only four or five months, and then returned to Chile,
which he made his home till 1852, though on the sea the most of the time; he
came back to California in that year, and engaged in fishing on the Sacramento
River, being one of the pioneer fishermen; he followed the business until 1858.
In that year he located his land on Grand Island, and has been engaged in
farming; owns one hundred and seventy-seven acres, worth about ten thousand
dollars; he is Freight Agent for the California Transportation Company at
Walnut Grove; he has held the office of Deputy Assessor for the last four
years. Mr. Holltum was married in 1859 to Miss M. J. Moulton, a native of
Vermont; they have had born to them four children one son is deceased.

HUMPHREY, ED. C. ; Post Office, Isleton; was born in Iowa
in 1854, and lived there until 1875, engaged in teaching; he came to California
in that year, and has since lived in this county. Mr. Humphrey is now engaged
in teaching school at Isleton.

JACKSON, WM., lives twenty-eight miles from Sacramento,
and three miles from Walnut Grove, his Post Office; was born in Prussia in
1840, and lived there until 1855, when he went to England, and followed a
sailor's life until 1856; he came to California and to this county in 1857; he
owns one hundred and twelve acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $20,000.
Mr. Jackson was married in 1871 to Miss Mary A. Mehan, a native of Ireland;
they have one child living, a son. A view of his place is given on another

KNOTT, G. A., lives on Andrus Island, four miles up the
river from Isleton, and five miles from Walnut Grove; was born in Maryland in
1829; removed to Missouri in 1838, and lived there until 1852, engaged in
farming; he came to California in that year across the Plains, and followed
farming; he settled on Andrus Island in 1855; owns two hundred and fifty acres
of land, worth, with improvements, about $16,000. Mr. Knott has held the
offices of Justice of the Peace and Notary Public. He was married in 1859 to
Miss J. Craib, a native of Scotland, who has borne him six children, five of
whom are living four sons and a daughter. A view of his place is given

MADGE, MATTHEW, lives thirty miles from Sacramento, just
opposite Walnut Grove, which is his Post Office; was born in England in 1825,
and lived there until 1848; he went to Australia in that year, and followed the
sea until 1851; he came to San Francisco in 1852 and remained until 1853, when
he settled in this county, and has been engaged in boating and farming. Mr.
Madge was on a war-ship, settling the boundary question; was in San Francisco
as early as 1846; he then went home, England, and to Australia, as mentioned
above. He was married in 1871 to Miss Elenor Hansen, a native of Denmark.

MILLER, JOHN; Post Office, Walnut Grove; lives
twenty-eight miles from Sacramento, down the river; was born in Virginia, in
1835, and lived there until 1870, engaged in merchandising; he came to this
State and county in that year, and engaged in farming; he owns fifteen hundred
acres of land, worth about $100 per acre ; he has rented, to white tenants,
thirteen hundred acres, and sixty-five acres to Chinamen; his place is on Tyler
Island, so named after the man who formerly owned the ranch; it was purchased from
him (Tyler) by Joseph Friend and Louis Winters. Mr. Miller was married in 1872
to Mrs. Friend, a native of Canada.

MORGAN, J. B.; Post Office address, 1122 Market street,
San Francisco; was born in Utica, New York, in 1856, and lived there until.
1876; he came to California in that year, and has since lived in San Francisco,
engaged as a paper-carrier. Mr. Morgan and his father own, in partnership, a
farm on Brannan Island.

POOL, FRANCIS M., lives on Andrus Island, two and a half
miles up river from Isleton his Post Office. Was born in Illinois in 1835, and
lived there until 1852; he came to California in that year, across the plains,
and engaged in mining in El Dorado County until 1854; he settled on Andrus
Island in 1855, and has lived here ever since, with exception of time spent in
Illinois---1866 to 1870. He owns one hundred and sixty acres of land, worth
with improvements about $15,000. Mr. P. was married in 1868 to Miss Sarah
Norman, a native of Illinois, and who has borne him five children, all of whom
are living two sons and three daughters.

POOL, JOSIAH, was born in Illinois in 1830; remained till
1847. Enlisted and went to the Mexican war; remained in the service eighteen
months; returned to Illinois, remained till 1852, engaged in flat-boating; then
came to California, across the plains; went to the mines of El Dorado County
and remained till 1855, when he came to Sacramento County, and located on Andrus
Island, April, 1858. Married Miss Sarah Freman, a native of Missouri, who died
in 1864; was married again to Mrs. Annie E. Wells, a native of Missouri. They
have six boys and three girls living. Mr. Pool has held the office of First
Lieutenant of the Walnut Grove Union Guard, Justice of the Peace, Notary
Public, and is now Postmaster at Isleton.

SMITH, HART FELLOWS, was born April 16, 1832, in
Illinois. In 1839 he went with his parents to Tennessee, where his home was
made till April 16, 1852, when he started across the plains with ox teams,
arriving in Sacramento September 27, 1852. He located on Grand Island in
October of the same year. Mr. Smith began business in California by chopping
wood at two dollars and fifty cents per cord. During the month of March, 1853,
he removed to his present farm, which embraces six hundred acres, and in 1878
the fine three-story house in which he now lives was built. The land is all
well adapted to the growing of grains, fruits, etc. Mr. Smith has at different
times held various offices; among them, Master of Subordinate Grange (which he
has represented in the State Grange several times) and Justice of the Peace. He
is literally a self-made man. In early times he followed brick-making and
brick-laying. Of later years farming has engaged his attention principally,
though freighting on the river has not been entirely neglected. August 14,
1860, Mr. Smith married Margaret McKever, of Tennessee. They have seven
children living and three dead. Mr. Smith has lost all trace of his family in
America, the family record having been lost. A view of his place may be seen

THISBY, GEORGE, lives on Andrus Island, four miles down
the river from Walnut Grove, his Post Office; was born in England in 1828; when
about six months old, removed with his parents to Canada and lived there until
1837; he then went to Wisconsin and remained there until 1845, when he moved to
New Orleans and engaged in steamboating until 1852; in that year he came to
California, and resided in Santa Cruz County until 1855, and then settled in
this county, engaging in farming. Mr. Thisby owns two hundred and twenty-one
acres on Andrus Island and fifty acres on Tyler Island. His land and improvements
are worth about $15,000. He was married in 1869 to Miss Rebecca Elliott; a
native of Ireland; they have six children living.

miles down the river from Sacramento; was born in New York, in 1832; removed to
Illinois in 1837, and lived there until 1853; he then came to California, and
engaged in mining, in El Dorado County, until 1855; he settled in this county
in that year, and engaged in farming; he owns one hundred and eighty-seven
acres of land, worth about fifty dollars per acre. He was married, in 1857, to
Rebecca Barrett, a native of Ohio; they have three children living two sons and
a daughter.

twenty-eight miles from Sacramento; was born in Missouri, in 1830, and lived
there until 1852, engaged in farming; he came to Sacramento County in February,

acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $20,000. He was married, in
1856, to N. J. Phipps, a native of Iowa; they have seven children five sons and
two daughters.

WOODWORTH, L. B., lives four miles below Isleton, his
Post Office; was born in Nova Scotia, in 1844, and lived there until 1866; he
then came to California, and resided in Amador County until 1873, being engaged
as an engineer; in that year he settled in this county, on Andrus Island. Mr.
Woodworth was married, in 1871, to Miss Jennie C. Stacy, a native of New York.
