ANDERSON,
N., is a native of Sweden; in 1855 came to Illinois, where he lived for two years,
and then started for California. For several years, Mr. Anderson husbanded the
wages earned, and, by careful management, secured the farm of two hundred and
forty acres, near Georgetown, on which he now lives. He superintends the farm

THOMAS, lives fourteen miles from Sacramento and half a mile from Franklin; he
owns two hundred and eighty-three acres of land; was born in England in 1829;
he emigrated to the United States in 1850, and engaged in farming in the State
of New York until 1857; in that year he moved to Iowa, and was engaged in
farming there until 1866; he then came to California and settled in this
county, where he is now farming. He was married in 1856 to Elizabeth Vile, also
a native of England, by whom he has had four children a son and a daughter
living. Mr. Anderson is now holding the office of Justice of the Peace of

WILLIAM H., lives twenty-six miles from Sacramento and three miles from
Courtland; was born in South America in 1843; he came to California with his
parents in 1849, and settled in this county in 1854; he is now engaged in
farming. He was married in 1872 to Margaret Little, a native of Scotland, and
by whom he has had four children, only one of whom is living a daughter. Mr.

B., lives twenty-two miles from Sacramento, at Courtland; he owns seven hundred
and thirty acres of land, six hundred of which are in one tract, on Sutter
Island. He was born in England, in 1820; emigrated to the United States when
about four years of age, and lived in New Jersey until 1827; in that year he
moved to New York, and remained until 1849; he then came to California,
arriving on Sacramento River in September; he has lived in this county ever
since; has an orchard and vineyard of twenty acres. He was married, in 1841, to
Miss Jane Patten, a native of New Jersey, and who has borne him two sons and
two daughters all living. His land and improvements, not including the Sutter
Island farm, are worth about $12,500; Post Office, Courtland.

JULIUS CLINTON, lives one and a half miles from Freeport, his Post Office, and
ten miles from Sacramento; he owns two hundred and twenty-six acres of land;
was born in Ohio in 1824; when about twelve years of age he removed with his
parents to Missouri, and remained there until 1839; he then went to Illinois
and lived there until 1849; he came to California in 1850 and engaged in mining
for six months. He settled in this county, on the Sacramento River, in October,
1850, where he has been engaged in farming ever since. Mr. Beach was married in
1855 to Miss Mary E. Davis, a native of Pennsylvania, who has borne him seven
children one son and six daughters; one of the latter is deceased. He has held
the office of School Trustee of Freeport District. His land and improvements
are worth about ten thousand dollars.

BRAINARD,
G., lives eight miles from Sacramento; owns forty-five acres; was born in Ohio
in 1827, and lived there until 1840; he then moved to Illinois, and remained
until 1849; in that year he removed to Indiana; subsequently he traveled over
the Western States until 1861, engaged as a photographer and dentist. He served
in the army from 1861 to 1863; then, returning to Illinois, he lived in Chicago
until 1870, when he came to California, and settled in this county; he owns and
keeps the pretty wayside home, known as “The Union House;” he has a fine
public-hall over his dining-room, size fifty by twenty-five feet; the floor is
made to spring; the first entertainment held in it was a party on July 4, 1874.
Mr. Brainard was married in 1851 to Sarah Elam, a native of Indiana; they have
one child a daughter. His land and improvements are worth about five thousand
dollars. He holds the offices of School Director and Postmaster.

N. J., lives sixteen miles from Sacramento, and two and a half miles from
Franklin Post Office; he owns two hundred acres; was born in the State of New
York, in 1823, and remained until 1848; he was engaged in farming and marble
engraving; he then removed to Wisconsin, and lived until 1874, engaged in
farming and marble cutting; in that year he came to California, and settled in
this county, where he has since resided. He was married, in 1857, to Mrs.
Phoebe Riley, a native of Vermont; they have three boys, and two girls all
living. Mrs. Brundage has two married daughters, living East, by her first
husband. Mr. Brundage is Road Overseer of District No. 33. His land and

1830; when a babe removed with his parents to Pennsylvania, and lived there

California in that year; is now engaged in farming and brick-making; he started
his brickyard in 1878, its capacity being five million brick a year. He was
married in 1853 to Mildred N. Butler, a native of Illinois; they have two

JOHN, was born in Germany, in 1837, and lived there until 1850; he lives two
miles from Franklin, his Post Office, and twelve miles from Sacramento; owns
474 acres. Mr. Ehrhardt emigrated to the United States, with his parents, in
1850, and lived in Missouri until 1852; in that year he came to California with
his father, and settling in this county, engaged in stock-raising; he drives
his stock every year up into Modoc County. He was married in 1865, to Carolina
Hollman, a native of Chile, and by whom he has had four children, boys, and all
are living. Mrs. Ehrhardt was a scholar in the first Sabbath-school organized
in San Francisco; it was organized by Father Taylor, in 1850. His land and

is his Post Office. He owns two hundred and forty-five acres of land. He was

and settled in this county, where he is now living amid farming; his land and

John Whitcomb thirty-eight hundred and fifty acres, having all under
cultivation except four hundred acres. He was married in 1868 to Miss Julia

the American River for about one year; he came to this county in 1850, and two
years later settled on the place where he is now living; he first turned his
attention to raising stock, but is now principally engaged in farming. He was
married in 1854 to Miss Sarah Sanford, a native of New York, who has borne him
five sons, four of whom are living. Mr. Frye has been Trustee of Franklin
School District for fifteen years. His land and improvements are worth about

county, where he has lived ever since; he is now engaged in dairying; his land

a Methodist Sunday-school, also held the office of Deputy County Assessor. He
was married in 1868 to Aurora L. Eayrs, a native of New Hampshire, and by whom
he has had two sons and two daughters.

ROBERT ARGYLE GORDON, lives three miles from Freeport, his Post Office, and ten
miles from Sacramento; owns one hundred and sixty-seven acres, and has twelve
acres of orchard; was born in Scotland in 1802, and lived there until 1826. He
went to sea in that year on an English man-of-war, and remained on her for
twenty-two years; during that time he was in twenty seven engagements. He came
to California in 1849: he spent some time in the mines, and then came to
Sacramento, and in 1857 settled where he is now living. He is engaged in
farming and fruit-raising. In 1854 he married Miss Mary M. Lassner, a native of
Bavaria. His land and orchard are valued at $16,000. A view of his place may be

GOURLIE,
MRS. R. A. G., is a native of Germany; born August 24, 1819. Left for the
United States in 1845, and found a home in Missouri, where, with her first
husband (J. Newbauer) and children, she remained four years. In 1849 they
started for California. When only three weeks out, Mr. Newbauer died with the
cholera. His wife dug his grave and buried him. Her friends tried to induce her
with her children to return, but to no purpose, for she was brave enough to
come to California, and she came. She was one hundred and eighty-five days in
reaching Sacramento. Here, by keeping a boarding-house, she managed to support
herself and four children and to accumulate some property. In 1854 she was
married to R. A. G. Gourlie, since which time she has been living at the
present home, on the Sacramento River, eleven miles below Sacramento City. No
children by the second marriage. A view of their home may be seen in this book.

GREEN,
JOSEPH, whose fine home makes one of the illustrations for this work, is a
native of Germany, having spent his early years on the River Rhine. He came to
New York at the age of eighteen; remained five years; in 1851, came to
California, and dug gold for a year. Then bought the farm where he now lives.
Teamed to the mines, selling the produce of his own farm at a big profit. In 1860
Mr. Green married. Has two children a son and a daughter. Mrs. Green died in
1868. The farm, one of the neatest and most productive in the county, has a
large orchard of choice fruit. Mr. Green is rich; is never idle; personally
directs his help, and guards his interest in the farm and orchard.

GREENE,
J. B., of whose residence we give an illustration, was born in New Hampshire in
1818, where he remained till 1837; then removed to Virginia, where he followed the
jewelry business till '49. Arriving in California in 1849, he located opposite
the upper end of Randall's Island, in what is now Yolo County. He lives
eighteen miles from Sacramento City, in Yolo County, though possessed of
valuable interests in Sacramento County. Mr. Greene owns one of the oldest amid
most valuable fruit ranches on the river. It is situated opposite the upper end
of Randall's Island, embraces one hundred and fourteen acres and contains ten
thousand choice trees. This ranch is presided over by his son, Mr. George
Greene. In Sacramento County, Mr. J. B. Greene owns a seven hundred and
fifty-acre dairy ranch, stocked with three hundred and fifty head of cattle,
one hundred of which are dairy cows. Since his arrival in California he has followed
stock-raising, farming and fruit-growing; has held the office of Levee
Commissioner and was a member of the First Board of Supervisors of Yolo County.
The value of Mr. Greene's property is not far from $50,000. In 1847 was married
to Miss Caroline P. Beale, of New Hampshire. They have had four boys; two

GEORGE, lives eighteen and three-quarters miles from Sacramento, and three and
three-quarters miles from Franklin; he owns eighty acres of land; was born in
Germany, 1834; emigrated to the United States and settled in New Jersey in
1863; he was engaged in farming in that State until 1873; in that year he came
to this State, and settled where he is how living. He was married to Elizabeth
Miller. They have three boys and two girls. His land and improvements are worth

that year they came to California and settled in this county, where he has
lived ever since and where he is now engaged in farming. Mr. Hack owns a large
ten-foot header, which he runs every season; his land and improvements are
worth about $8,000. He was married in 1869 to Berdinia F. Keys, a native of
this county; they have one child a daughter.

from Sacramento; owns one hundred and twenty acres of land; was born in
Virginia in 1806; removed with parents in 1814 to Ohio, where he lived until
1842 engaged in farming; he then moved to Illinois and engaged in farming until
1853; he came to California in that year and settled in this county, where he
has since been farming and orcharding. Mr. Hite was married in 1829 to Miss A.
Matthus, a native of Ohio, and who has borne him thirteen children seven boys
and six girls; one son and two daughters are deceased. His land and
improvements are worth about $1400.

DWIGHT, lives eighteen miles from Sacramento and two miles from Courtland, on
the banks of the Sacramento River; owns six hundred acres of land; he was born
in Ohio in 1824 and lived there until 1849; he came to California in that year
by way of Cape Horn, and spent one year in the mines; he then settled in this
county, and has lived here ever since. He has a fine orchard and vineyard,
bordering on the Sacramento River, containing eighty acres; he is also engaged
in stock-raising and dairying. He was married in 1857 to Miss N. H. Alcock, a
native of Ohio; they have three children two sons and a daughter. Mr. Hollister
held the office of Supervisor in 1863 and 1864; he also represented the county
in the Assembly of 1865 and 1866. His land and improvements are worth about

DAVID T., lives ten and a half miles from Sacramento, and three and a half
miles from Freeport, his Post Office; he owns sixty acres of land; was born in
Maine in 1817, and lived there until 1838; he traveled through the Western
States until 1840, engaged as a teacher; he stopped in Wisconsin until 1844,
engaged as a teacher and miner; he then moved to Illinois and engaged in
farming until 1849, when he went to New Orleans and took passage for California
by way of the Isthmus, arriving in 1850; he mined a few months, and then buying
some poor cattle, drove them to the Sacramento river for pasture: Mr. Lufkin
dates his residence in this county from that time. He is now engaged in
orcharding; his land and improvements are worth about $10,000. He was married
in 1843 to Miss Ann E. Dalton, a native of North Carolina, who has borne him
one son and three daughters, all of whom are living. He has held the office of
Justice of the Peace for the last twelve or fourteen years. The historic “arrival

in 1855. He was married, in 1860, to Miss Mary McDermitt, a native of Scotland;
she died in 1865, leaving him three children one son and two daughters. He
built, in 1877, what is known as “Painter's Hall,” at a cost of $2,000; the
first entertainment held in it was given during the holidays of 1877. His land

then to Washington Territory, where the livery business again occupied his

the first one appointed to that office. He was married in 1847, to Augusta

SIMS,
JOSEPH, lives on Section 29, Township 7 North, Range 5 East, Mount Diablo
meridian and base; has eleven hundred and twenty acres of land; was born in
London, England, in 1832; with his parents came to Canada in 1833, and to New
York in 1846. He joined “Stevenson's Regiment;” sailed from Philadelphia, for
California, on ship Isabella in August, 1847, and landed at Monterey in
February, 1848. At the end of the Mexican war was discharged; went to Mokelumne
Hill; mined for a short season; then went to San Francisco to spend the winter.
In April, 1849, he went to North Fork of American River; from there to Shasta;
then back to the Sacramento River, acting as mate on the schooner Dlce
Manana. In September went to the mines on the Middle Fork of the American;
made money, and in November, 1849, settled in present Franklin Township; during
1850 established his present home. Married Mary L. Moor in 1860. They have
three living children. Mr. Sims' Post Office is Union House. A view of his

SIMS,
J. V., lives twenty-two miles from Sacramento, at Courtland, on east side of Sacramento
River; he owns one hundred acres; was born in Illinois in 1828, and lived there
until 1851. He started for California in that year in company with six others;
he is the only one of the company now living on the coast. Not having money
enough to defray his necessary expenses, he stopped on the way and engaged in
keeping a lodging house until he could save enough to resume his journey; he
arrived in Sacramento in 1852 with only his blankets; walked to Auburn, and
then to Newcastle, and worked during the summer at whipsawing. He saved $1,500,
and loaned it at five per cent. a month, the borrower soon failing in business.
He settled in this county in 1853, and has lived here ever since. Was married
in 1856 to Mary B. Strong, also a native of Illinois; they have three sons and
four daughters. Mr. Sims held the office of Supervisor from 1871 to 1874. His

SMITH,
MYRON, was born in Tioga County, New York, and resided there till twenty-five
years of age, when he went to New Orleans for two years. He landed in
California November 1, 1849, and engaged for a year in mining at Mud Springs.
Was one of a party to make the first trip to Humboldt, by mule-train,
experiencing narrow escapes and numerous hardships. For one year he was a
pioneer miner at Humboldt, then went to San Francisco, bought a stock of
groceries and engaged in business at Sacramento. At the expiration of one year
bought a team and wagon, and for two years profitably sold goods throughout the
mining towns. In 1853 moved to his present home, engaged largely in the stock
business, and was heavily damaged by the floods of 1862-3. Mr. Smith is sixty
years old; is respected and esteemed by all, for modesty and veracity; has a
farm of three hundred and twenty acres of fine land. A view of his residence is

STEPHENSON,
JAMES M., lives sixteen miles south of Sacramento City, and two miles from
Franklin, his Post Office. He owns seventeen hundred acres of land. He was born
in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1828, and in 1834 moved to Howard County,
Missouri. In 1849 he came to California, and remained in the mines until 1852;
he then spent one year in the East visiting friends, and returned to
California. Since his return he has given his attention to dairy and general
farming. In 1853 he married Miss Azelia E. Halley, a native of Missouri, and
daughter of Captain Frank Halley. They have two sons and one daughter, all

WALDIE,
JOHN, was born at Kelso, Scotland in 1822. Here he resided until 1850, when he
came to New York and remained five years, engaged in blacksmithing a trade
learned in Scotland. Late in the year 1855 he started for California, and, in
December, found himself in Placerville. Christmas day Mr. Waldie began the
erection of the first foundry in Placerville. From 1856 to 1865 he conducted
one of the largest blacksmith shops in Sacramento. It was destroyed by fire in
1865. Hill's Ferry, on the San Joaquin River, was next made his home, where,
for five years, blacksmithing was continued, when failing health induced Mr.
Waldie to remove to his present home, eight miles South of Sacramento. His farm
embraces two hundred and twelve acres, well improved. A view may be seen on
another page. Was married in 1869 to Miss Margaret Lenox. They have no
children.
