BABCOCK, I.  N., lives two miles from Sacramento, his Post Office; owns thirty-five acres of land; was born in Rhode Island in 1828; removed when four years of age to Ohio, and lived there into 1849; he came to California in that year, driving oxen across the plains, and settled where he has resided ever since; is now engaged in farming, stock raising and dairying.  Mr. Babcock says, when he arrived where Sacramento now stands, the ground was covered with campers, anxious to get to the mines, but who had no means of conveyance; he commenced teaming to the mines, receiving 10c per pound for freight; with his six oxen being made as high as $300 per week.  He was married in 1868 to Mrs. Evaline Leak, a native of Kentucky, who had six children by her former husband; she has borne Mr. Babcock one daughter.  He held the office of Justice of the Peace from 1852 to '54, and of Supervisor from 1858 to '60.

CIPPA, THOMAS, lives 6 1/2 miles from Sacramento, his Post Office; owns 147 acres of land; was born in Switzerland in 1835, and lived there until 1859; in that year he went to Australia, and engaged in mining and butchering until 1866; he then came to California, and remained here until 1872, when he returned to the place of his nativity.  He came back to this State in the same year, and is now engaged in farming and stock raising; his land and improvements are worth about $4500.  Mr. Cippa has held the office of School Trustee of Oak Grove District.  He was married in 1866 to Mary Bernasochi, also a native of Switzerland; they have four sons and one daughter.

COFFIELD, P., lives one and a half miles from Sacramento, which is his Post Office; was born in Denmark in 1843, and lived there until 1862; he came to England, and followed the life of a sailor until 1868; he came to California in that year by way of Australia, and engaged in farming in this county until 1874; he then moved to Sacramento City, and was proprietor of Sierra Nevada saloon for about four years.  In 1878 you removed to his present place of business, at the Shed, American River bridge, where he keeps a saloon, just north of the Toll Bridge.

COLBURN, J. A., lives eleven miles from Sacramento, which is his Post Office; owns two thousand nine hundred acres of land, 640 acres of which is in Sacramento County; was born in New Hampshire in 1818; in 1836 he removed to New York, and subsequently to Ohio, where he lived until 1852, engaged as a cooper; he came to California in that year, and remained about four years and Sacramento City.  In 1856 he purchased the old Eagle Hotel, in Placer County, and ran it about seven years; travel on that road then being light, he removed to his present place in American Township, where he has since been engaged in farming and stock raising.  Mr. Colburn was married in 1845 to Miss C. French; they have to daughters.

CONE, GEORGE, lives one and a half miles from Sacramento, which is his Post Office; he owns seventy-two acres of land; was born in Ohio, in 1815, and lived there a until 1838; he then moved to Missouri, and engaged in farming until 1844; in that year he removed to Cincinnati, and was engaged as lumber measurer on the Ohio River and Fourth Ward, for about eight years.  He came to California in 1852, and settled in this county, where he now resides.  He was married, in 1861, to Katherine C. Lyon, a native of New York; there they have one son, and one daughter.  Mr. Cone was a member of the Assembly in 1855; he has held the office of Justice of the Peace since 1854, with the exception of year 1855.

EVERETT, C. A., lives four miles from Sacramento, which is his Post Office; was born in Maine, in 1834; when seven years of age, he removed with his family to Massachusetts, and lived there until 1852; he came to California in that year, and engaged in mining; subsequently he moved to this county, where he is now engaged in farming and carpentering.  Mr. Everett has held the office of Deputy Assessor for the last fourteen years.  He was married, in 1863, to Louisa Werden, a native of New York; they have three sons and one daughter.

FOLEY, MICHAEL, lives five miles from Sacramento, his Post Office; owns 148 acres of land; was born in Ireland, in 1819, and lived there until 1849, engaged in farming; he emigrated to the United States in that year, making New York his home, being engaged in steamboating until 1851; came to California, and settled in this county in 1852, where he is now farming and raising stock; his land and improvements are worth about $4500.  Mr. Foley has held the office of Clerk of Oak Grove School District.  He is was married, in 1846, to Mary Coakley, also a native of Ireland, and who has borne him six children -- -- two boys, and four girls, all of whom are living.

HOLLAND, JAMES, was born in South Carolina, in 1824; he removed to Alabama, and  remained till 1850, when he started for California.  After his arrival, the mines engaged in his attention for seventeen years; then went to the silver mines of Idaho, and remained some time.  Mr. Holland removed to Sacramento in 1867, and bought the property known as Hubbard' s Gardens, which included the first orchard in or about Sacramento.  In years past, this orchard used to give a profit of $10,000 or $12,000 per annum.  The orchard is to-day well stocked with the finest varieties of cherries, apples, nectarines, &c.  Twenty-four acres are set in alfalfa, and the yield is prodigious.  Mr. Holland married Adilia Black, a native of Georgia, in 1871.  A fine view of Mr. Holland's property may be seen on another page.  His Post Office is Sacramento.

JOHNSTON, WILLIAM E., lives twelve miles from Sacramento, which is his Post Office; he owns 310 acres of land; was born in Ireland, in 1816; emigrated to the United States, in 1827, and lived in Knox County, Ohio, until 1833; he then moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and engaged in milling and farming until 1853; he came to California in that year, and settled in this county, where he has since been engaged at farming.  He was married, in 1849, to Margaret Hargrave, also a native of Ireland; she has borne him eight children, all of whom are living -- five sons, and three daughters.  Mr. Johnston held the office of School Trustee, of Lincoln District, for about six years.  A view of Mr. Johnston's place may be seen on another page.

JUDGE, MRS. WINIFRED, lives three miles from Sacramento, which is her Post Office, she was born in Ireland; her maiden name was Kane; she was married, in 1852, to John J. Judge; he was born in Ireland, in 1822, and lived there until 1848; he emigrated to the United States in that year, and lived in North Carolina, engaged in masonry, a until 1852; he then came with his bride, to California, and settled in this county; he died in 1876.  Mrs. Judge has carried the business (farming) on since her husband's death; she has three sons, and two daughters living -- one son deceased.  She owns seven hundred fifty-three acres of land, which, with improvements, are worth about $16,000.  A view of Mrs. Judges plays may be seen on another page.

KEITHLY, ABRAM; Post Office, Sacramento; lives ten miles from that city; was born in Missouri, in 1831, and lived there until 1849; he came to California in that year, and has lived in this county ever since; he has been engaged in farming and threshing for the last twenty-five years; owns one hundred and sixty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $2000.  Mr. Keithly has held the office of Road Overseer, of District No. 3.  He was married, in 1861, to Gertrude Chatterton, a native of New Jersey; they have three children -- a son, and two daughters.

SMITH, GEORGE, lives ten miles from Sacramento, which is his Post Office; owns one hundred and sixty acres of land; was born in Maine, in 1832, and lived there until 1855; he came to California in that year, and settled in this county, where he has lived ever since; his land and improvements are worth about $3000.  Mr. Smith has taught school, in Lincoln District, for the last ten years; his school numbers thirty scholars.  He was married, in 1868, to Miss Laura A. Slight, a native of Ohio; they have one child -- a daughter.

STRAUCH, DAVID, was born December 16, 1830, in Bavaria, Germany, where he learned and followed the shoemaker’s trade. Here he married Miss Lena, daughter of John P. Miller, of Bavaria, on the 13th of March, 1850. In 1858 they left Germany for the United States, landing in New York in June, thence via the Isthmus route to California. They have had thirteen children, viz.:Victor Frederick, born July 28, 1851; John Peter, born December, 1857; Christina, born  December 4, 1858, died November 9, 1859; Mary, born October 21, 1860, died October 8, 1862; Jennie May, born October 29, 1862; Rudolph W., born December 22, 1864; Chs. Frank, born April 10, 1867; Emma Caroline, born May 11, 1869; Gustave Anton, born March 12, 1871;  Charlotte Julia, born June 13, 1874, and died December 6, 1876; Annie Caroline was born August 10, 1876. Two of the children, having died in infancy, were not named. Since his arrival in California, Mr. Strauch has been engaged in farming and dairying. He owns a farm of eleven hundred acres, about nine miles from Sacramento, on the road to Marysville. The grape is cultivated for his own use only. He keeps a dairy of sixty to one hundred cows. STRAUCH,V. F., lives ten miles from  Sacramento City, and owns five hundred and ten acres of land; he was born in Germany in 1850, and emigrated to America and to California in 1858, where he has since lived, engaged in farming. In 1872 he married Miss Emma Steinmiller, a native of this State. They have a family circle of one boy and four girls. Mr. Strauch’s land and improvements are worth $10,000, a fine view of which may be seen on another page. Post  Office, Sacramento City.

WEBER, MRS. ELIZABETH, lives eight miles from Sacramento, which is her Post Office; was born in Germany in 1825, and lived there until 1854; she emigrated to the United States in that year, and came to California; she owns one hundred and sixty acres  of land, which is well located; she has a vineyard and distillery in connection with her farm; her land and improvements are worth about $6000.  She was married in 1864 (her maiden name being Jugal) to J. Weber, and by whom she has had two sons and four daughters all living. Mr. Weber died in 1878.

WILLIAMS, MRS. J. A., lives ten miles from Sacramento, which is her Post Office; she owns six hundred and twenty acres of land; was born in Georgia. She married Wm. H. Graham, and had by him two daughters, Mollie and Sallie Graham; Miss Mollie is now engaged as teacher of Oak Grove School; Mr. Graham died in this State in 1859. The subject of this sketch was again married in 1863 to Jas. A. Williams, by whom she has one son, Frank.
