ALDRICH, LEVI M., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento, at
Elk Grove---his Post Office---and nine miles from Galt. He was born in Cass
County, Michigan, in 1846, and lived there until 1872, engaged in farming and
saw milling; he came to California in that year, and settled in this county;
subsequently he returned to Michigan and farmed one year, when he came back to
this State, and is now farming. He owns twenty acres of land, a house and lot,
worth in all about $3000. He was married in 1868 to Emily Beauchamp, also a
native of Michigan.

ALLIN, RICHARD, lives twelve miles from Sacramento and
two and a half miles from Elk Grove---his Post Office; was born in Holsworthy,
Devonshire, England, in 1827, and lived there until 1853, engaged in farm work
and learning trade of blacksmith; he then went to Canada, and worked at his
trade until 1863. He came to California in that year, and settled in this
county; soon after he moved to his present home. He owns fifty-five acres of
land, worth with improvements about $4000. Mr. Allin was married in 1855 to
Annie Westlake, who was born in Hartland, Devonshire, England. A view of his

ANDREWS, JOHN N., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento and
nine miles from Galt; was born in Athol, Massachusetts, 1832, and lived there
until 1849. He learned the trade of tinner with his father. He came to
California in that year, and was engaged in mining and working at his trade for
about two years; he mined at various places from the American to the Feather
River; he then settled in Sacramento City, and remained there until 1872; three
years of the time he was engaged as a tinner and hardware dealer, and
afterwards as an engraver. He is now carrying a stock of general merchandise,
is railroad agent, agent for Wells, Fargo & Co., and Postmaster. He owns
property worth about $3000. He was married in 1865 to Jane McClelland, who was
born in Down County, Ireland. They have two children living Nellie Melita, born
July, 1867, and Mary Elizabeth, born July, 1875.

ARNOLD, CALEB, lives one and a quarter miles from
Florin---his Post Office---and ten miles from Sacramento; was born in Vermont
in 1806, and lived there until 1836; he then moved to Wisconsin and remained
about a year, when he removed to Illinois and was engaged in farming there
until 1852; in that year he went to Iowa and farmed about eight years. He came
to California in 1865 and settled in this county, where he has since lived; he
owns twenty acres of land, which, with improvements, are worth about $1500. Mr.
Arnold was married in 1829 to Miss Phoebe Davis, also a native of Vermont; they
have five children living---one son and four daughters. He held the office of
Justice of the Peace for one and a half years.

BARTHOLOMEW, C. P., lives three miles from Elk Grove, his
Post Office, and thirteen miles from Sacramento. Was born in State of New York,
in 1842. When quite young he moved, with his parents, to Illinois. He has lived
in several of the Western and Southern States. In 1854 he came across the
plains to California; he then engaged in mining at Placerville, which he
followed with fair success for about five years. He then settled in this
county, on his present location, and has been engaged principally in farming
ever since. He owns one hundred and sixty acres of land, which, with
improvements, are worth about $3000. Mr. Bartholomew was married in 1866 to
Miss Harriet Y. Lingsay, a native of Iowa; they have a son and a daughter
living.

BATES, MRS. C. E., lives four miles from Florin---her
Post Office---and twelve miles from Sacramento; she was born in the State of
New York in 1838; when quite young she moved with parents to Iowa and remained
there until 1853 when they came across the plains to California. She was
married in September, 1853, to Jackson J. Bates, also a native of New York;
they settled in San Joaquin County and lived there until the fall of 1855; they
then moved to Amador County, and resided there until fall of 1857; they settled
in this county in that year, and moved to present location in 1870; she owns
four hundred acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $6000. Mr. Bates
died June 12, 1875. She has seven children three sons and four daughters.

BAYLESS, MRS. V. M., lives four miles from Elk Grove, her
Post Office, and eighteen miles from Sacramento; was born in Tennessee, in
1829, and lived there until she was about twenty-three years of age; she was
married September 27, 1848, to C. B. Bandy, also a native of Tennessee; they
came to California in 1852. Mr. Bandy died April 20, 1861. She was again
married August 10, 1862, to Mr. H. Bayless; she has five children---two boys
and three girls. Mrs. Bayless owns three hundred and twenty acres of land,
worth, with improvements, about $6000.

BEANS B. F., lives one mile from Elk Grove, which is his
Post Office, and sixteen miles from Sacramento; he was born in Pennsylvania, in
1839, and lived there until 1856; he came to California in that year, across
the plains, and was engaged in the lumber trade in El Dorado County until 1863;
he then settled in this county, on his present location. He owns three hundred
and twenty acres of land, which, with improvements, are worth about $8000. Mr.
Beans was married in 1869 to Miss Emma E. McFall, a native of New York State.

BIRCH, W. A.; Post Office, Walsh Station; lives eight
miles from Elk Grove, and fourteen miles from Sacramento; was born in Michigan
in 1836; in 1846 he moved with his parents to Illinois, and lived there until
1848, when he removed to Iowa, and remained there until 1851; he came to
California in that year, across the Plains; was engaged in mining in El Dorado
and Tuolumne Counties for about eight years; he then settled in this county,
and has been farming ever since; he owns 640 acres of land, worth, with
improvements, about $6000. Mr. Birch has held the office of School Trustee for
the last eight years. He was married in 1860 to Miss R. J. Campbell; they have

BOND, A. E., lives one mile from Elk Grove, his Post
Office, and fourteen miles from Sacramento; was born in the State of New York
in 1827; he moved to Wisconsin in 1843, and lived there until 1850, engaged in
masonry; he came to California in that year, across the Plains, and engaged in
mining in El Dorado and other counties for two years; he then went to
Sacramento, and was in the masonry business there about four years. He settled
near his present location in 1856, and has since been engaged in farming and
stock raising; owns three hundred and twenty acres, worth, with improvements,
about $3600. Mr. Bond has now held the office of School Trustee for about four
years. He was married in 1855 to Miss Frances Eustis, a native of Maine; they
have six children four boys and two girls.

BROWN, R. J., lives four and a half miles from Florin,
his Post Office, and thirteen miles from Sacramento; was born in Canada in
1840; he moved to Ogle County, Illinois, in 1852, and lived there until 1859;
he came to California in that year, and settled in this county; he was engaged
in baling hay and teaming for about eight years; he has been farming for the
last nine years; owns three hundred and twenty acres of land, worth, with
improvements, about $6000. Mr. Brown was married in 1871 to Miss M. Pugh, a
native of Missouri; they have three children---two boys and a girl.

BROWN, S., lives two miles from Elk Grove, his Post
Office, and thirteen miles from Sacramento; was born in State of New York, in
1819; when an infant, his parents removed to Canada, and the subject of this
sketch lived there until 1859, engaged in lumbering, mill business, and keeping
a general merchandise store; he came to California, in that year, across the
plains, and settled in this county, where he has been farming ever since; he
owns one hundred and sixty acres of land, which, with improvements, are worth
about $3,000. Mr. Brown has been East twice, visiting the scenes of his earlier
life. He was married, in 1871, to Miss Ellen Bascom, a native of Illinois. A

BUDAHN, C. F., lives four miles from Elk Grove, his Post
Office, and fifteen miles from Sacramento; was born in Wisconsin, in 1849, and
lived there until 1872; he came to California in that year, and settled in this
county, on his present location, where he has lived ever since; he owns two
hundred and forty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $4,000. Mr.
Budahn was married, in 1874, to Miss A. M. Volkamer, a native of Bavaria; they
have two boys Arthur Louis, born March 8, 1875, and Herold George, born

BUELL, D. H., lives three miles from Florin, his Post
Office, and twelve miles from Sacramento; was born in New Hampshire in 1832; he
removed to Ohio, with his parents, in 1844, and lived there until 1849, when he
went to Illinois, and remained there until 1855; he then went to Iowa, and was
farming there about nine years; then, moving to Nebraska, he resided there
until 1871; he came to this State in that year, and settled where he is now
living engaged in farming and stock-raising; owns one hundred and sixty acres
of land, worth, with improvements, about $5,000. He was married, in 1854, to
Miss Susan D. Arnold, a native of Vermont; they have five sons and a daughter,
living. Mr. Buell's father is still living; his mother has been dead a number

BYINGTON, E. I., lives in Elk Grove, fifteen miles from
Sacramento; was born in Connecticut in 1833, and lived there until 1853; he
learned the painter's trade there; came to this State in that year, and settled
in this county; he followed mining a few months. He commenced in the same year,
in Sacramento, the business of raising buildings, being the first to undertake
the moving of brick buildings. In 1869 he moved to San Francisco, and was
engaged in the same business there for two years; he then moved to Elk Grove,
and, with the exception of a short time in the employ of Railroad, has been in
the hotel business ever since.

BYRON, ROGER lives a mile and a quarter from Elk Grove,
his Post Office, and sixteen miles from Sacramento; was born March 16, 1830, in
Ireland, and lived there until 1851; he emigrated to the United States in that
year, and lived about two years in Connecticut, where he was engaged in
farming; he then moved to the State of New York, and remained there until 1859;
he came to California in that year via the Isthmus, and settled in this county
near present location; moved to where he now lives in 1866; is engaged in
farming and fruit raising: owns three hundred and thirteen acres of land,
which, with improvements, are worth about $4, 500. He was married in 1857 to Miss
C. Hassett, also a native of Ireland; they have five children---one son and
four daughters.

CARRINGTON, CHARLES N. lives three-fourths of a mile from
Florin, his Post Office, and eight miles and a quarter from Sacramento; was
born in New Jersey in 1853, and lived there until 1860; in that year he came to
California with his parents by way of the Isthmus, and settled in this county;
his father died in 1860; his mother is still living in the county engaged in
farming. Mr. Carrington has a fine vineyard of eleven acres, in a prosperous
condition; is also extensively engaged in raising strawberries: owns forty
acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $1,800. He was married in 1877
to Miss T. Wood, a native of Illinois; they have one child---a daughter. A view

CARRINGTON, R. P.; Post Office, Florin; lives eight and a
half miles from Sacramento; was born in New Jersey, in 1844, and lived there
until 1859; he came to California in that year, with his parents, and settled
in this county; they engaged in farming and fruit-raising; he is now engaged in
the same business, on the same place where he gathered his first crop---which
was a good one---settling the doubt in their minds as to the worth of the
country for grain growing; he owns eighty acres, which, with improvements, are
worth about $4,000. He was married, in 1870, to Annie Hack, a native of Battle
Creek, Michigan, who has borne him four children, only one of whom is
living---Annie Pauline, born July 10, 1877.

CASEY, A. B., lives five miles from Florin, his Post
Office, and thirteen miles from Sacramento; was born in the State of New York,
in 1856; he came to this State with his parents, in 1859, and settled in this
county, where he has lived ever since; he owns one hundred and sixty acres of
land, which, with improvements, are worth about $2,600. He was married, in
1877, to Miss Sarah Ellis, a native of California; they have one child---a
daughter.

CHINNICK, JAMES T.; Post Office, Elk Grove, where he
lives, fifteen miles from Sacramento; was born in England in 1843, and lived there
until 1872, engaged in blacksmithing and carriage-making. He emigrated to the
United States in that year, and worked at his trade in New Jersey until 1873;
from that time until his removal to this State---which was in 1876---he was
somewhat unsettled, living in several places; he was engaged in carriage-making
in Sacramento until December, 1878, when he settled in Elk Grove, and commenced
his present business; he owns house, shop, and lots, worth about $1,000. Mr.
Chinnick's father-in-law, Mr. Walton, came to Sacramento in 1850, on the day of
the Squatters' fight; the population of the county was then almost entirely
confined to Sacramento and the mining camps in the immediate vicinity. Mr.
Chinnick was married in 1877 to Benicia Walton, a native of Sacramento.

CLINTON, ALEX., lives one mile from Elk Grove, his Post
Office, and sixteen miles from Sacramento; was born in Kingston, New York, in
1832; moved to Wisconsin in 1842; he removed to Iowa in 1852, and worked at carpentering
until 1859. He came to California, across the Plains in that year, and settled
in Garden Valley, El Dorado County, and engaged in mining there until 1868; he
then moved to this county, and settled where he now lives, and has since been
engaged in farming and carpentering. Mr. Clinton owns one hundred and sixty
acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $3, 500.

COONS, DAVID, lives two miles from Elk Grove, which is
his Post Office, and fifteen miles from Sacramento; was born in St. Louis, Mo.,
in 1840, and lived there until 1853. He came to California with his parents in
that year, and lived in San Francisco one year; they then moved to this county,
and settled near his present location; he owns three hundred and sixty acres of
land, which, with improvements, are worth about $5,000. His father died in
1872; mother is still living. Mr. Coons has held the office of Constable.

CORE, A. F., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento and
four miles from Georgetown, his Post Office; was born in Ross County, Ohio, in
1830, and remained there until 1852; he then moved to Iowa and engaged in
farming until 1859; he came to California in that year and engaged in mining at
Shasta; subsequently he ran farm machinery until 1861, when he settled in this
county, and soon after, on the place where he now lives; owns two hundred and
forty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $4000; he is now engaged
in farming and running farm machinery. Mr. Core has held the office of Road
Supervisor and School Trustee. He was married in 1863 to Elizabeth L. Carroll,
a native of Indiana, and who has borne him five children, all of whom are
living---three sons and two daughters.

CRENSHAW, L., lives in Florin, ten miles from Sacramento;
was born in Illinois, in 1846. When still an infant he moved to Iowa, and lived
there until 1868, being engaged the latter years in working for a railroad as a
blacksmith; he then moved to Nebraska, and was engaged in stock-raising and
blacksmithing there until 1876; in that year he came to California and to this
county; is now engaged in blacksmithing, sheet-iron and pump work, and fruit
culture; owns eleven acres, worth, with improvements, about $4000. Mr. Crenshaw
has held the office of Justice of the Peace. He was married in 1864 to Maria
James, a native of Iowa, who has borne him seven children, four of whom are
living---Minnie, born August 11, 1866; Curtis, born November 27, 1870; Henry,
born January 29, 1873; and Lulu, born July 13, 1876.

DART, LEVI S., lives ten miles from Sacramento, and four
miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Connecticut in 1839; moved
to Michigan in 1841, and lived there until 1860; in that year he came to
California, and was engaged in sheep herding for nearly two years; he then
followed teaming one year over the mountains to the mines; then he turned his
attention to farming; he settled where he now lives in 1869; owns one hundred
and fifty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $3,000. Mr. Dart has
held the office of School Trustee; he was married in 1869 to Mary A. Jackson, a
native of Iowa, and who has borne him five children, all of whom are living---three
sons and two daughters.

DICKSON, CHARLES, lives twelve miles from Sacramento and
two miles from Elk Grove---his Post Office; was born in Germany in 1818, and lived
there until 1850, engaged in farming; he emigrated to the United States in that
year, and engaged in farming in Madison County, Illinois until 1853; he started
across the plains June 1 of that year, with cattle and sheep for California;
spent the following winter in Salt Lake. City; he resumed his journey May 1,
1854, and arrived in this State in July; he settled with his stock near
Stockton, and followed farming and dairying about eighteen months. He moved to
this county in April, 1856, and settled where he has since lived, and is still
engaged in farming, stock-raising and dairying; owns four hundred and eighty
acres of land, worth with improvements about $15,000. Mr. Dickson was married
in 1850 to Miss F. Stapel, also a native of Germany. They have living four sons
and two daughters. A view of his ranch is given on another page.

DIXON, ALFRED, lives 12 miles from Sacramento and two
miles from Elk Grove---his Post Office; was born in New Brunswick in 1821, and
lived there until 1837, when he removed with his parents to Ohio, and remained
there until 1843; in that year he went to Quincy, Illinois, and read law with
O. H. Browning and N. Bushnell until 1845; he then moved to Porter County,
Indiana, and engaged in the practice of law and farming until 1860. In April of
that year he started across the plains with horse-team, and arrived in
California in September. He settled at once in this county, on his present
place; he has been engaged principally in farming and stock-raising ever since
he came to the State; owns eight hundred acres of land, worth with improvements
about $15,000. Mr. Dixon was married in 1854 to Miss Martha Biggart, a native
of Ohio, who bore him three sons, two of whom are living; she died in 1875. He
was married again in August, 1877, to Mrs. Julia A. Hall, a native of New
Brunswick. A view of his place is given elsewhere.

DREW, E., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento, and two
and a half miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Vermont in 1826;
moved to Cayuga, New York, in 1827, and lived there until 1849; he started for
California in that year, stopping a short time in Illinois, and arriving at
Placerville in 1850; subsequently he settled in Yolo County, and was engaged in
farming and stock raising until 1867; he then took a trip East, and was gone
some months; on his return he resided in Vallejo for about a year; settled on
his present home in 1870, where he still continues farming; owns one hundred
and sixty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $6000. Mr. Drew has
held the offices of School Trustee and Enrolling Officer. He was married in
1854 to Sarah E. Goodrich, a native of New York, who has borne him three
children, only one of whom is living---Elmer R., born December, 1865. A view of

EVERSON, W. E., was born in the State of New York. He
came to California in the year 1870, and located in Sacramento County, at Elk
Grove, in the same year. He has followed, and is now following the business of
merchandising. Mr. Everson owns town property in Elk Grove. This place is also
his Post Office.

EVERSON, J., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento, and
nine miles from Galt; was born in central New York in 1833, and lived there
until 1856, engaged in farming with his parents; he came to California in that
year, and engaged in farming in this county until 1876; he then turned his
attention to the mercantile business, and is now carrying a stock of general
merchandise at Elk Grove, under the firm name of J. Everson & Co. Mr.
Everson has held the offices of School Trustee, Justice of the Peace, and Road
Supervisor. He owns property, worth, with his stock of merchandise, about
$20,000. Was married in 1868 to Alvira Treat, a native of Michigan; they have
one child, Lester T., born July, 1876. Mr. Everson has caused a view of Elk
Grove to be inserted in this work.

FRAZIER, W. M., lives eight miles from Sacramento, and
one mile from Florin, his Post Office; was born in Ohio, in 1829, and lived
there until 1842, when he moved to Michigan, and remained there until 1843; he
then went to Indiana, and engaged in farming until 1852; he came to California
in that year, and followed mining and merchandising a few years; he has been
farming, though, the most of the time, three years in Colusa County, and since,
in this county; he now rents three hundred acres. Mr. Frazier was married, in
1865, to Nancy G. Murray, a native of Iowa; they have had born to them six
children, five of whom are living---three sons and two daughters.

FREEMAN, O. S., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento, and three
from Elk Grove, his Post Office. He was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1815,
and moved to the Territory of Iowa in 1838; he moved to Illinois, near the
Mississippi River, in 1850. In 1861, he moved with his family to California,
for the benefit of his health. Mr. Freeman has always been engaged in farming,
and now owns eight hundred and eleven acres of land, valued at $35,000. January
30, 1842, he married Miss Nancy Clark, a native of Ohio, who died in 1858,
leaving one son, Abe C. Freeman, now attorney - at - law, Sacramento. He was
again married, in September, 1859, to Miss A. M. Ludington, a native of Oswego
County, New York. A view of Mr. Freeman's place is given elsewhere in this
work.

GAGE, DELOS, lives a half mile from Elk Grove, his Post
Office, and fourteen miles from Sacramento. He was born in New York, in 1835,
and remained till 1844; then moved to Michigan, engaged in farming till 1859;
in that year he came across the plains to California, located in Santa Clara
County, and remained for two years. His next move was to Sacramento County, to
the present home, where he located in 1865, and has since resided. Mr. Gage
married Miss Agnes Robertson, a native of Canada West, in 1867; they have three
children---two boys and one girl. He has held the office of School Trustee for
six years; land and improvements worth about $1,200.

GARDNER, ESAU, lives nine miles from Sacramento, and one
and one-quarter miles from Florin, his Post Office; was born in England in
1828, and lived there until 1849; he emigrated to the United States in that
year, and stopped a short time in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois; he came
across the plains to California in 1850, and followed teaming from Sacramento
to the mountains for about twenty years, residing in Placer County; he settled
in this county, on his present location, in 1875, and is now engaged in
farming, stock and fruit raising; he has a very fine vineyard of fifty acres;
owns six hundred acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $10,000. He was
married in 1856 to Miss Caroline Colbaker, a native of Ohio; they have four
children---three daughters and a son. A view of his place may be seen in this

GARRETT, SAMUEL, lives fifteen miles from Sacramento and
three miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Canada West in 1824,
and lived there until 1845; he then moved to Illinois, and remained there until
1864, engaged in farming; he came to California and settled in this county in
that year, and followed farming; is now farming and sheep-raising; owns three
hundred and twenty acres of land, worth, with improvements and live stock,
about $12,000. Mr. Garrett has held the office of School Trustee nearly all the
time since coming to the State. He was married in 1845 to Miss Silvia Gillitt,
also a native of Canada West; they have eight children---five boys and three
girls.

Office, and nine miles from Sacramento; was born in Germany in 1847, and lived
there until 1858; he emigrated to the United States in that year, and came
direct to California; was engaged in the brewing business in Sacramento City
until 1877; he then settled where he now lives, and is engaged in farming and
fruit culture; he owns one hundred and sixty acres' of land, worth, with
improvements, about $8,000. Mr. Gebert was married in 1875 to Mary Guth, a
native of this county, who has borne him one son---Charles, born January 5,
1879.

GUNTER, A. M., lives twelve and a half miles from
Sacramento and four miles from Florin, his Post Office; was born in Indiana in 1842;
when quite young he moved with his parents to Iowa, and remained there until he
was six years of age; in 1853 they came to California, and settling in El
Dorado County they lived there two years, when he came to this county, and has

HEALEY, EDWARD, lives three and a half miles from Elk
Grove and eighteen miles from Sacramento. Mr. Healey owns fifty-seven acres of
land; he was born in England in 1826; remained until 1849; engaged in
manufacturing and railroading; he emigrated to the United States in 1849 and
settled in Massachusetts, where he engaged in railroading; came to California
via Cape Horn in 1850; followed mining for about five years in El Dorado and
Nevada Counties; settled in Colusa County in 1855; moved to Sacramento County
in 1856, where he now resides, engaged in farming; in 1852 and '53 Mr. Healey
visited the World's Fair at New York. Married in 1853 Miss E. Killingsworth, a
native of North Carolina; they have two boys and three girls living. Land and

HILL, J. D., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento, in Elk
Grove; was born in Connecticut 1817, and lived there until 1829; he then moved
to Pennsylvania, and remained there until 1875, engaged in wagon-making; he
came to California and to this county in that year, and is now working at his
trade. Mr. Hill was married in 1844 to Lydia Davis, a native of New York, and
who bore him three sons, now living in the State of New York; she died about
1850; he was again married in 1857 to Adalinda Nichols, a native of
Pennsylvania. H. E. Hill, a brother of the above, was born in same State, but
is eight years younger; he has no family; has been in this immediate
neighborhood since about 1850, engaged the most of the time in millwrighting;
he built his mill in Elk Grove in 1876.

HOBBS, DIGORY, born in Devonshire, England, 1818; came to
Grant County, Wisconsin, in 1842; he came the Plains across in 1852, and tried
teaming, which soon gave way to profitable merchandising at Middletown. Soon
after closing out business he bought land adjacent to his present home; then
bought his present home of eight hundred acres, one-half of which is the finest
bottom land, under a high state of cultivation, and well improved. Mr. Hobbs is
interested in mines, stock-raising---especially fine sheep---and farming. Was
married September 17, 1856, to Miss Lavina Lee; they have no children. A view of
his homestead may be seen in another part of this book.

HOOVER, S. M., was born in 1829 at Martinsburg,
Pennsylvania, and lived there until 1850, when he moved to Illinois. After two
years he started for California, where he arrived in 1852. Mr. Hoover is one of
the pioneer teamsters of California, having continued in that business from the
date of his arrival until 1868; he made the business pay, and with the profits
bought the tract of land on which he now lives. There are twelve hundred acres
of fine land in the farm, near Elk Grove, one-half of which is fertile bottom
land. Mr. Hoover and Miss Mary Van Zandt were married in 1860; a son, fourteen
years of age, is the only child; farming and stock-raising engage Mr. Hoover's
attention. One of the illustrations of this volume represents his home.

HUNT, GEORGE L., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento, and
three and a-half miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Canada in
1841, and lived there until 1862; he then went to Vancouver Island, British
Columbia, and was engaged in lumbering and mining until 1866. He came to
California in that year, and followed mining in Calaveras County until 1872; he
settled in this county in that year, and has been farming ever since. He rents
three hundred and twenty acres of land of Mrs. E. Foulks. Mr. Hunt was married
in 1871 to Margaret Gillore, a native of Fall River, Massachusetts, and who has
borne him four children, all of whom are living, two boys and two girls.

miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Ohio in 1829; moved when quite
young with his parents to Indiana, and remained there until he was twenty-one
years of age; he then removed to Illinois, and lived there until 1859; in that
year he came to California, and settled in Sutter County; he came to this
county in 1872; owns five hundred acres of land, about two hundred of which
will produce from sixty to one hundred bushels of corn to the acre, and one
hundred acres of very good alfalfa land. He has a large oak grove, where
camp-meetings are held; is now extensively engaged in farming and
stock-raising; his land, with improvements, is worth about $25,000. Mr. Iler
was married in 1850 to Miss Rebecca Walker, a native of Kentucky; they have
seven children, five boys and two girls.

JENKINS, MRS. A. M., lives sixteen miles from Sacramento,
and three miles from Elk Grove, her Post Office; was born in Tennessee in 1831;
when quite young she moved with her parents to Alabama, and lived there until
1839, when they moved to Missouri. She was married April 23, 1846, to John O.
Devin, and lived in Missouri until 1856, when they came to California and
settled in this county, where she has ever since resided. Mr. Devin died
December 22, 1873; she was again married to Wm. A. Jenkins, who died April 29, 1877;
she has eight children five boys and three girls. She owns one hundred and

JOHNSON, CHARLES, of firm of Johnson & Sugden, lives
at Florin, his Post Office, ten miles from Sacramento; he was born in
Pennsylvania, in 1826, and remained there with his parents, on a farm, until
1847; then started westward, and, at Cincinnati, Louisville, and other places,
followed various pursuits for three years; came to California in 1850; mining
in El Dorado County until 1855; then went to Sacramento, and engaged in
merchandising and keeping Western Hotel Saloon; next went to Pacific Islands,
and then to Pennsylvania; returned again to the Western Hotel, in Sacramento;
removed, and again returned to Western Hotel, for the third time. In 1876, in
company with Mr. Sugden, founded the town of Florin and their present business.
They are extensive and almost exclusive purchasers and shippers of the immense
fruit crop of this locality. The strawberry crop alone amounts to one hundred
tons annually. Messrs. Johnson & Sugden's property is worth about $6,000.
Mr. Johnson married Mary Show, a native of Ohio, June, 1876.

JOHNSON S. D., landlord of Railroad House at Elk Grove;
was born in Ohio in 1828 and remained until 1840, when he removed to Illinois,
where he remained until 1850, engaged in blacksmithing; then came to
California, and worked at the same business until 1854; then mined and farmed
about two years; next kept hotel at Brighton two years, and the following two
years was Deputy Sheriff and Jailer; again kept hotel in Hicksville about one
year, when he was the second time appointed Sheriff and Jailer; he then returned
to Hicksville and kept hotel twelve years; afterwards followed the same
business at Modesto, and subsequently kept the Parker House eight months; came
to Elk Grove in April, 1878, where he keeps hotel. Mr. Johnson has also filled
the offices of Deputy County Assessor and Constable. He married Celestia Gilson
in 1855; there have been born to them five children, one son and two daughters
now living; both daughters are married and reside in Sacramento, California.

four miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Ross County, Ohio, in
1814, and lived there until 1835; he then moved to Wisconsin and engaged in
lead mining until 1849; he crossed the plains in that year and came to
California; followed mining for two years; after mining he kept hotel in
Sacramento; trading in Plumas County for two years; is at this time engaged in
mining in Placer County and farming in Sacramento County. He was married in 1851
to Miss R. Hatch, a native of Ohio, who died July 4, 1867. Mr. Kelly's land and
improvements are worth about $15,000.

there till 1852; he came via the Isthmus to California, working at the
blacksmith trade for four years after his arrival; in 1856 he moved to his

vineyard in that locality, many telling them that grapes would not grow there;
one of the finest vineyards in the State may be seen on his place. Mr. Kerr is
engaged in farming and fruit growing; was married to Miss Angelina Worthington

settlers in the neighborhood of Florin; not a house was then to be seen near
where he now lives; Spanish cattle then roamed over the plains, and all the

remained until 1862, when he joined the army and remained in the service until
1863. He then returned to Pennsylvania and completed the learning of the
tinsmith's trade. In 1866 he went to Woodbury, New Jersey, and remained until
1876, engaged in tin and stove business. He then came to Sacramento,
California, engaged in the same business, which he now carries on at Elk Grove.
His land, improvements and merchandise are worth about $1500. He married Celia
A. Johnson in 1865, a native of New Jersey. They have had two children---one
daughter, Ida May, born 1872, now living.

Sacramento; was born in Ulster County, New York, 1832; removed with his parents
to Charleston, South Carolina, in 1843, and worked on a steamer which ran

1852, being engaged in running a steam engine, and a steamer; he came to
California in that year, and engaged in farming on Dry Creek, in this county;
and in the same year went to Amador County; he ran a mill engine at Jackson
until 1855. Then he went into the shingle and shake business, near Volcano, at
Aqueduct City, which he continued about a year, when he turned his attention to
mining in the same county until 1860; he followed teaming in same locality
until about 1862, and then teamed from Sacramento to Carson and Virginia City
until about 1870; he then engaged in farming again in this county until 1874,
on the Cosumnes River; in that year he settled at Elk Grove, and engaged in the
business of butchering, which he still continues, in connection with the hotel
business, which he started in 1876; has property valued at about $6000.

the same distance from Florin, which is his Post Office. Was born in Illinois,
in 1846, and lived there until 1862; he came to California in that year, and

mined until 1869, when he moved to Merced County, and was in the sheep business
until 1877. That same year he removed to his present residence, where he is
engaged in farming and fruit culture. He owns forty acres of land, worth, with

Carrington, a native of New Jersey, who has borne him one son Wallace Erle,

RUTTER, JAMES, was born in England in 1827, and remained
till 1849. In early life he learned the carpenter's trade, and in 1849 he
removed to New York City, where for one year he worked at that trade. From New
York Mr. Rutter moved to Quincy, Illinois, and then to Galena, in both places
working at his trade. In 1852 he came to Sacramento, and for six years followed
carpentering. Then moved to present farm eight miles from Sacramento, on
Central Pacific Railroad. He owns one hundred and fifty acres of land,
fifty-five acres of which are in vineyard. At the State Fair of 1879 Mr. Rutter
received a first premium for the best raisins, and a gold medal for the best
display of fruit in the sixth department. Was married in 1851, at Galena,

SUGDEN, FRED., of the firm of Johnson & Sugden, lives
at Florin his Post Office ten miles from Sacramento; he was born in Halifax, in
1832, and remained there until 1839; then went to sea, and from that early
period of his life was in various capacities on the ocean until 1852. He came
to California, leaving New York as master of the vessel Marion Page, which was
loaded with war supplies for the insurgents who were opposed to the government
William Walker was endeavoring to establish in Nicaragua. The vessel's name was
changed to Teresa, and was afterward in the service of the famous filibuster.
Mr. Sugden has resided in California ever since; twelve years of the time was
engaged in mining at various places. In 1875 engaged in present business of
general merchandising.

and six miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office. Was born in Missouri, in 1850.
He came to California in 1852, with his parents. They settled in this county,

land, worth, with improvements, about $3000. His father died in 1860; his
mother is still living.

THOMPSON, THOMAS J., lives fourteen miles from
Sacramento, and one and a quarter miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office. Was
born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, in 1814. Removed, with his parents, to
Indiana, in 1822, and lived there until 1846. He then went to Adams County,
Illinois, and remained there until 1854. He crossed the plains in that year,
and followed mining in El Dorado County for a short time. He settled on his
present location in the fall of 1856, and has been engaged in farming ever
since. Owns eighty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $2500. Mr.
Thompson was married in 1840 to Mrs. M. A. Earls, a native of Ireland. She died
in March, 1872. He married again, in October of the same year, to Miss Agnes B.
Thornell, a native of England. He has five children living.

WACKMAN, A. K., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento and
three miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Ross County, Ohio, in
1833, and lived there until 1863, engaged in farming and stock-dealing. He came
to California in that year, and settled in this county near his present
location; he has resided in the county ever since; owns three hundred acres of
fine, well improved, and productive land on Cosumnes River. Mr. Wackman was
married in 1869 to Miss Amanda M. Colton, a native of Illinois; they have three
children, two sons and a daughter. He has been engaged principally in farming
ever since he came to the State. A view of his farm can be seen on another page

WILLIAMS, ELZA, lives fourteen miles from Sacramento and
six and a-half miles from Florin, his Post Office; was born in Ohio in 1811;
when eight years of age he removed with his parents to Illinois, and lived
there until 1853, engaged in farming; he came to California in that year,
across the Plains, and settled in El Dorado County, near Placerville, where he
was engaged principally in farming until 1857; he then moved to Sacramento
County, and remained here until 1864, when he moved to Idaho, and was farming
and stock-raising near Boise City. In the Fall of 1866 he returned to this
county, and has resided here ever since; owns one hundred and sixty acres of
land, worth, with improvements, about $2,500. He was married in 1829 to Miss
Eliza McPherson, a native of Virginia, and who has borne him thirteen children,
eight of whom are living---six sons and two daughters.

WILLIAMS, MATT., lives ten miles from Sacramento and two
miles from Florin, his Post Office; was born in England in 1851, and lived
there until 1872. He emigrated to the United States in that year, and was
engaged in farming in New York until 1874; he then came to California, and
settled in this county, where he has since been engaged in farming. His parents
are still living in England.

WILSON, MRS. E. M., lives fifteen miles from Sacramento
and three miles from Elk Grove, her Post Office; was born in Vermont in 1837,
and lived there until 1860. She came to California in that year, and settled in
this county, near Elk Grove, where she has resided ever since; she owns five
thousand acres of land. Mrs. Wilson has been engaged in the sheep business ever
since she came to the State. A view of her fine ranch is given in this book.

WINKELMAN P. W., lives seventeen miles from Sacramento
and three and a quarter miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office. Was born in
Switzerland in 1823. He emigrated to the United States with his parents in
1836, and lived about a year in New York. He then moved to Indiana and lived
there about four years, when he moved to Missouri, and resided there until
about 1850. He came to California in that year across the plains, and followed
mining for about two years at Placerville, and then settled in this county. He
owns three hundred acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $6,000. He
was married in 1848 to Elizabeth Schnider, also a native of Switzerland. They
have five children---one son and four daughters.

WOODWARD, A., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento and
three and a half miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office. Was born in the State
of New York, 1822, and lived there until 1849, engaged in farming. He went to
Wisconsin in that year and remained until 1850, when he came to California
across the plains, and followed mining in Calaveras County until 1853; he then
returned East. In 1854 he drove a large herd of cattle across the plains, and
on his arrival in this State he settled in this county on present location, and
has been engaged in farming and stock-raising ever since. He was married in
January, 1856, to Miss Elizabeth Sampson, a native of England. They have one
son and two daughters. Mr. Woodward has held the office of School Trustee.
