MISSISSIPPI TOWNSHIP.

CARRICK, WM., was born in County Kildare,
Ireland, January 1, 1826. He came to the United States in 1844, and settled in
Rensselaer County, New York, where he remained till 1856; then to Iowa, where
he remained till 1871. Came to California with his family in 1871, and settled
first on Cosumnes River; then, in 1875, on the present home, sixteen miles from
Sacramento City, on the Auburn road. Mr. Carrick has followed farming and stock
raising, having now a well improved and fertile farm, and growing all kinds of
grain. Married Miss Bridget McCann, of New York, in September, 1854, by whom he
has six children, viz.: John T., Mary E., Lucy, Mattie L., Maggie and Charles
W. The son John was born in New York; the other children were all born in Iowa.

CARDWELL, JOHN T., farmer and stock raiser,
Ashland; Post Office, Folsom; owns two thousand five hundred acres of land and
property in town of Ashland; land and improvements are valued at $20,000; born
in Ireland in 1839; lived there until 1864; then emigrated to the United
States; came direct to Sacramento County, via the Isthmus of Panama, and
settled in this township, where he since continued to reside. He was married to
Miss May Howe, from Ohio, in 1872; they have two children, twins one son and
one daughter aged four years; has held the position of Road Overseer.

CARDWELL, WM., farmer and stock raiser;
lives six miles from Folsom, and seventeen miles from Sacramento; Post Office,
Folsom; owns three hundred and ten acres of land, valued at $3500; born in
Ireland in 1839; lived there and engaged in farming until 1866; then came to
the United States, landed in New York City, and immediately started for
California, via the Isthmus of Panama; settled in this county, where he has
since been engaged in farming and stock raising.

DARLING, GEORGE W., farmer; Post Office,
Roseville, Placer County, California; lives four miles from Folsom and eighteen
miles from Sacramento; owns four hundred acres of land, valued at $3000; born
in Dublin, Ireland, in 1835; emigrated to the United States in 1850; came
direct to California via. Cape Horn; followed mining for four years at
Mississippi Bar, Sacramento County; then engaged in ranching in this county up
to 1860; that year went to Carson City and entered the hotel business; six
years later returned to this county and commenced farming, where he now
resides. Married Ellen Mullen, from Ireland, in 1859; they have one son and two
daughters.

LAWSON, H. C., mining; lives in Ashland;
Post Office, Folsom; owns thirty acres of land, property in Ashland, Folsom,
and mining claim; born in Denmark, in 1831; lived there until 1850, when he
came to the United States, and followed the sea up to 1853; then came to
California via. Cape Horn; followed mining in Placer County until 1860, when he
moved to Ashland, this county, where he has since resided; has followed mining
at Folsom; worked the claim known as Lawson Claim, at Bunker Hill. Married Mrs.
Mary Jane White in 1861; she is a native of Ireland; she has one son by former
marriage; they have two daughters.

LAWTON, JOHN, merchant, Ashland; owns one
hundred and seventy-five acres of land; land and improvements valued at $4000;
born in Maine, in 1827; hived there and engaged in general merchandising up to
1851; then came to California, across the Isthmus of Panama; mined in Placer
and Sacramento Counties for about eight years; in 1859 settled in Ashland,
where he carried on a general merchandising business. He was married to Miss M.
A. Kittredge in 1868; she is a native of Maine. Mr. Lawton has held the office
of Constable for two years. Post Office, Folsom.

LOWELL, H. W., farmer and stock-raiser,
lives four and one-half miles from Folsom and eighteen miles from Sacramento;
Post Office, Folsom; owns six hundred and forty acres of land, worth, with
improvements, about $7500; born in Maine in 1843; came to California in 1863
and settled on present location in Sacramento County, where he has since been
engaged in farming and stock-raising. He was married to Miss Nancy A. Campbell
in 1875; they have one daughter. Mrs. Lowell's parents moved to California when
she was four years of age.

PILCHER, STEPHEN, farmer; lives four
miles from Antelope and eighteen miles from Sacramento; Post Office, Roseville,
Placer County, California; owns three hundred and twenty acres of land, valued
at $7000; born in 1849 in Wisconsin; in 1866 crossed the plains to California;
settled in this county, engaged in railroading for about eight years; moved to
present place in 1875 and has since followed farming. He was married to Maggie
Birmingham in 1872; she was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; they have four
children three sons and one daughter.

PORTER, HENRY, farmer and stock-raiser;
lives five miles from Folsom and seventeen miles from Sacramento; Post Office,
Roseville, Placer County, California; owns two hundred and twenty-eight acres
of land, valued at $5000; born in Ireland in 1831; in 1849 came to the United
States and settled in New York City, where he engaged in draying until 1857;
then came to California via the Isthmus of Panama; settled in Placer County; in
June, 1859, moved to Sacramento County, where he now resides. He was married to
Miss Amelia Brown in 1857; she was born in Ireland; they have five children
four sons and one daughter. A view of his place is given on another page.

WACHTEL, F., farmer; lives five miles
from Folsom and seventeen miles from Sacramento; Post Office, Roseville, Placer
County, California; owns three hundred and twenty acres of land, valued at
$6000; born in Germany in 1833; came with parents to Missouri in 1843; engaged
in farming; in 1852 came across the plains to California and settled in this
county; has been engaged in farming the greater portion of his time since
arrival in the State; moved to present location in 1873. He was married to
Frederica Leh in 1867; they have six children one son and five daughters.

WALLACE, J. H., Agent North Fork Ditch
Company; lives at Ashland; Post Office, Folsom; born in Tuolumne County,
California, in 1856; in 1866, moved with parents to Stockton, California; in
1876, he moved to present location, in Sacramento County, where he has since
lived. He was married to Miss M. L. Clark in 1879; she is a native of
California.
