One
of the best known farmers of Sacramento county is Paul V. Amick, who is cultivating the well improved
and productive ranch of Saddle Runyon Rippon, located on the river about four
miles below Courtland. He was born in Ione,
Amador county, this state, on the 1st of December, 1891, and is a
son of Ellis Grant and Lillian (Vogan) Amick. His maternal grandfather was
sheriff of Amador county for sixteen years and was one of the community’s
strong and influential men. Ellis G. Amick was born in Jackson valley, near
Ione, and was a son of A. J. Amick, who crossed the plains to California in
1849, and first found employment in a shop at Tenth and K streets, Sacramento.
Later he went to the mountains and took up land in Jackson valley, in the
cultivation of which he was successful. As he prospered he bought more acreage
and became the largest land owner in the valley. He died at the age of seventy-six years. His son Ellis G. Amick, established a drug
store at Ione, long know as the Ione Pharmacy, and also engaged in ranching.
Subsequently he sold his holdings in Amador county and located in Sacramento.
He became interested in the mills at Brighton in 1906 and continued their
operation until his death, in 1913. Lillian (Vogan) Amick was a native daughter
of California, having been born at Mountain Springs House, a famous stage
headquarters on the highway between Ione and Jackson. Her mother, Mrs. Vogan, died in 1929, at the age of eighty-six
years.
Paul
V. Amick attended the public schools of Ione and graduated from the Sacramento
high school in 1908. He learned the butchering trade in a pioneer meat shop in
Sacramento, and followed that line of work until 1918, when he took over the
county agency for the Nash automobile.
He carried on that business successfully until 1925, when he sold out,
and has since devoted his attention to the management of his wife’s interests.
Mr.
Amick was united in marriage to Miss Ora Sol Rippon, a granddaughter of Sol and
Adaline E. Runyon. Sol Runyon was a member of one of the best know pioneer
families in Sacramento valley, and at one time was the largest landowner along
the river and controlled the navigation of the river. Mr. and Mrs. Amick are
