*The record shows Knights Valley in Napa County was changed to Albany in Sonoma County. Apparently name and site changes occurred simultaneously.

†When Russian River was established the site was in Mendocino County. A radical boundary change transferred it to Sonoma County in 1855. The same change threw the future site of Clairville into Sonoma County. Therefore, Clairville when established in 1858 was in Sonoma County rather than Mendocino County as shown by the Post Office records.

*Loving's Ferry was established in 1855 in San Joaquin County, on the north bank of the Stanislaus River, then the San Joaquin-Stanislaus County boundary. On 3 June 1858, Pleasant R. Feagins was displaced as Postmaster and L. J. Morrow was appointed, the name changed to Holden's Ferry, and about the same date the site was changed into Stanislaus County on the south bank of the river. On 18 Dec 1858, Feagins was re-appointed, the name changed back to Loving's Ferry, and the site moved to the north bank in San Joaquin County. On 30 March 1860, David B Gardner was appointed, but on or about that date the Legislature made a change in the county boundary, giving both banks of the river to Stanislaus County. This automatically placed Loving's Ferry in Stanislaus County but the record is silent as to any change of site that might be implied in the appointment of a new Postmaster.

†Established in Tuolumne County, into Stanislaus County when created.
