*Huron and Kingsburg are reported to have been established in Tulare County. As to the present site, however, Huron has always been in Fresno County. Also, the present site of Kingsburg appears to have been in Fresno County in 1875, but may have been acquired by a boundary adjustment of 1876. The name terminated in “h” from 18 Feb 1876 to 11 Jan 1894.

†The appointment of Edward P. Hart, the first Postmaster of Millerton, is recorded on a page headed “County Unknown.” A later notation says “Now in Tulare County.” This could not be, for the northern boundary of Tulare County was approximately thirty miles southerly of the San Joaquin River, upon which Millerton was located. It must have been in Mariposa County when established.

The appointment of the second Postmaster, Hugh A. Carroll, dated 30 June 1855, is recorded under Mariposa County, with notations “Into Merced County” (lined out) and “Into Frezno County.”

There can be no doubt that it was in Fresno County after that county was created 19 April 1856, taking all the surrounding area from Mariposa and Merced counties.

However, there is a possibility that it was in Merced County from 19 April 1855 to 19 April 1856. The answer depends upon the site of the office. The boundary between Mariposa and Merced counties, described in 1855, followed a road that crossed the San Joaquin at Converse's Ferry, known to be at or near Millerton.

If the Post Office was upstream, it remained in Mariposa; if down-stream, it went into Merced for a year until taken into Fresno, of which it was the county seat from 1856 to 1874. All of the historical references identify Millerton with Mariposa and Fresno counties only. It therefore seems apparent that Millerton should be recorded as established in Mariposa County in 1853 and transferred to Fresno County in 1856.

‡New Idria, according to the postal records, was established in Monterey County and soon transferred to Fresno County. The original Fresno-Monterey line was never legally altered. Therefore, the site of New Idria msut have been changed; or, more likely, the record was in error, promptly corrected, due to uncertainties as to the location of the boundary on the ground, or because the site had access solely from the Monterey side. In 1887, New Idria and Panoche were transferred from Fresno County to San Benito County by a boundary change.

§ Wheatville (the second of that name) is recorded “into Kings County 11 April 1907”, and back to Fresno County in 1914. The present site of Wheatville, near Burrel, has always been in Fresno County, although there was an abortive move to transfer it to Kings County in 1907.
