*Into Alpine County when created 16 March 1864. Carey's Mills and Konigsberg were earlier in Nevada Territory, the latter in Douglas County.
†Established in Calaveras County, into Amador when created. Ione City was carried as Jone Valley in Calaveras until 1857, when changed to Jone City. Apparently the errors of spelling and county were discovered and corrected shortly thereafter.
‡Established in El Dorado County, into Amador when boundary was changed in 1855, though carried in El Dorado records until after appointment of Samuel R. Miller as postmaster 6 Feb 1864.

Into Santa Cruz Co. |
Note: Although the appointment of the Postmaster of Santa Cruz by the Department in Washington occurred on 9 April 1850, time of transit and other factors indicates that the recommendation by the Special Agent in San Francisco must have been made before the county name was changed by the Legislature late in March. Also, the office probably opened for business some time before the March date, under authority of the Special Agent.
