SAMUEL A. MEYER
Samuel A. Meyer is a prominent
representative of journalistic interests in Orange County as president of the
Newport Harbor Publishing Company and as owner of the Newport News, the Balboa
Times and the Costa Mesa Herald. He is a
native of Burlington, Iowa, born in 1880, and prior to coming to Newport Beach,
California, was connected with the Denver Post and Times and with the Leader at
Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1912 he went to
Chandler, Arizona, where for more than a decade he published the Chandler
Arizonan. In 1922 he sold this paper and
came to California, taking up his abode at Newport Beach, were as president of
the Newport Harbor Publishing Company he now owns three weekly journals—the
Newport News, Balboa Times and Costa Mesa Herald, all of which enjoy an
extensive subscription and advertising patronage. The recently completed building of the
company which stands on the main boulevard in Newport Beach is a modern,
up-to-date structure with splendid facilities for all branches of the printing
industry.
In 1908 at Des Moines, Iowa, Mr.
Meyer was united in marriage with Miss Vera Johnson, a daughter of J. D.
Johnson, well known advertising man of Des Moines. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer are the parents of a
daughter, Lucile J., who attended the University of California at Los Angeles
and resides with her parents in the Lido Isle home. Mr. Meyer manifests an active and helpful
interest in civic affairs, withholding his aid and cooperation from no movement
or measure for the general welfare. His
influence as a journalist is ever found on the side of progress and many
projects looking toward community advancement has been successfully promoted
through the medium of his newspapers.
Mr. Meyer is a Mason, having
membership in the Lodge and Chapter. He
also belongs to Costa Mesa Lions, Newport Harbor Service Club, California
Newspaper Publishers Association and Orange County Weekly Newspaper
Association, and is vice president of the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce.
