WARREN HILLYARD
Warren K. Hillyard is making a
splendid record in the office of county surveyor of Orange County, which he is
now filling for the third term. He was
born at Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa, September 27, 1885, his parents being
Lewis and Sarah Jane (Kenyon) Hillyard, both of whom are deceased. The mother passed away in 1899 and in 1900
the father came to Orange County, California, where he engaged in ranching at
Tustin to the time of his death in 1928.
Warren K. Hillyard pursued his
education in the public schools of Santa Ana, California, and following his
graduation from high school entered the University of California at Berkeley,
which institution conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Science in
Engineering in 1901. Subsequently he
spent three years in Mexico where he was engaged in irrigation work for the
Culiacan Land Company. On returning to
Orange County, California, he was appointed chief deputy county surveyor and
thus served for three years, while from 1915 until 1917 he was engaged in
“pebble” mining in Nevada. When the
United States became involved in the World War, Mr. Hillyard enlisted for
service. He was in training at Camp Lee,
Virginia, and Camp Meade, Maryland, was given a commission as first lieutenant
and assigned to the Twenty-seventh Engineers, a mining regiment. For a period of seven months he served
overseas with the First Army, being first employed in mining work in France and
later building bridges after the retreating German forces. He was honorably discharged at Camp Kearney,
California. Mr. Hillyard then served as
chief deputy in the office of county surveyor of Orange County from 1919 until
1921, when he was appointed surveyor to fill out the unexpired term of J. L.
McBride, who had resigned. In 1922 he
was regularly elected to that office, in which he is now serving for the third
term, having been re-elected thereto in 1926 and 1930. He is a highly capable incumbent in the
position of country surveyor and enjoys an enviable reputation as an expert and
reliable engineer.
On the 30th of June,
1923, Mr. Hillyard was united in marriage in Santa Barbara to Miss Arlie
Marguerite Cravath, of Santa Ana, California, and
they are the parents of two children, Maxine Marie, born November 20, 1924, and
Marilyn, born December 9, 1927. The
family residence is at 1809 Bush Street, Santa Ana. Mr. Hillyard is a member of the Lions Club
and takes a keen interest in Boy Scout work.
He has membership in the American Legion and in the Greek letter
fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa, while fraternally he is affiliated with Santa Ana
Lodge, No. 794, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
