Reese Faber PEEK (1923-2004) (obit.)

R. Faber Peek

Reese Faber Peek, known as Faber to family and friends, died in his sleep at home on
June 28, 2004. He was 80 years old.

Born
Nov. 11, 1923, he was a fourth-generation Sacramentan. Growing up in east Sacramento, he graduated from Sacramento High School in 1941 and married his high school sweetheart, Jan Wright Peek, who died in 1984.

Faber served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as an airplane mechanic. After the war, he completed his college education at UC Berkeley and San Jose State College.

A treasured accomplishment in Faber's life was rowing No. 4 in an eight-man shell for UC Berkeley from 1945 to 1947.

His long and illustrious teaching career began at
California Junior High School in Sacramento where he taught metal shop and math. Later, he continued teaching at Geothe Junior High, becoming a most beloved and sought-after guidance counselor.

His students remember him most for his wonderful sense of humor, his favorite saying - "OK4U?" - and his easygoing nature. His marriage to
Frances in 1985 was his rebirth and he thrived on their 20-year love affair.

He charmed all who came in contact with him. Some of the things he cherished most were the cabin he built at Lake Tahoe, playing piano, singing barbershop music, fly fishing on the Truckee River, trips to Bodega Bay, creating pieces of art, puttering around in his workshop, being the father of his family, hot fudge sundaes, butter with corn on the cob, Uncle Rol's biscuits with gravy and ordering .56 pounds of salmon at the grocery store.

His family and friends love him dearly and will miss him more than can be said.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of
Davis; daughters Nondra (Noni) of Sacramento and Nori of Roseville; grandchildren Jeni Schwarz of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rindi Vale of Sacramento, Jaci Nitschke of Roseville and Corey Nitschke of Chico; great-granddaughter Emi Vale; brother and sister-in-law, Neal and Jerrie Peek of Davis; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and reception to celebrate his life will begin at
11 a.m. Saturday at the home of his brother Neal, 27459 Oakside Drive in Davis.

Lynda Genevieve BAKER (1961-2004) (obit.)

Lynda G. Baker

Lynda Genevieve Baker died
June 5, 2004. She was 42.

Born
Sept. 20, 1961, in Sacramento, her family moved to Davis when she was 3 years old. She attended local schools, and music was always an important part of her life. She began playing the viola in grade school. In junior high she played flute in the orchestra. She started voice lessons at that time and was in the Concert Choir, and performed in a number of school musicals.

While attending
Davis High School, she was a member of the youth choir at Davis Community Church under the direction of Rachel Kessler. In 1979, her senior year, she was pleased to be accepted into the Madrigals and performed under the direction of Richard Brunelle.

While she was very humble about her academic achievements, her family is proud to share that Lynda was on the dean's list during her time at UC Davis.

In the early 1980s she moved to
Sacramento. She continued her interest in music by learning to play guitar. She began to perform her original songs at open mike nights in Sacramento and the Bay Area.

Her loss is keenly felt at the Sacramento Bee, where she worked for the last 14 years. She was grateful to work for a company that was so supportive and caring of its employees and where she made dear friends. She touched many lives at the Bee and they have tenderly shared their sorrow and sympathy with her family.

She was preceded in death by her oldest sister, Janice, in 1996.

STEICHEL,

James Evan STEICHEL (1963-2004) (obit.)

James Steichel

James Evan Steichel, a
Sacramento resident and former longtime resident of Davis, died suddenly on April 8, 2004, as a result of a motorcycle accident in Napa County. He was 41 years old.

Born
New York on Jan. 18, 1963, he was employed by UC Davis as the field operations coordinator for the Student Experimental Farm from 1992 until his death.

A highly skilled mechanic and carpenter with diverse interests, he excelled at applying theory to real world situations, his family said. He lived for a year in
Kenya with the Friends World program, where he used alternative building products and assembly methods to design and construct an aquaculture system. He also spent several months at the Desert Research Institute in Israel's Negrev desert, studying building design for arid climates.

In his work at the UC Davis Student Experimental Farm, he was a generous, patient and giving teacher and mentor, enthusiastically sharing his knowledge and expertise with hundreds of college students, his family said. His kindness, positive attitude and encouragement brought out the best in the students, often leading them to accomplish more than they had expected of themselves.

In addition, his extraordinary skills as a carpenter are evident in many beautiful structures on site at the Student Farm, as well as private residences in the surrounding
Davis community. In his personal life, he was a devoted and nurturing father.

His interests in mechanics and his nature as a hands-on individual led him to become a certified airframe/aircraft power plant mechanic and motorcycle mechanic. Motorcycle sport riding became a consuming passion of his over the last four years of his life. His Italian yellow bike, a Ducati 748, became a distinctive sight and sound around
Davis and the winding mountainous roads of highway 128. He held an exuberant appreciation of the design and craftsmanship invested in high-end motorcycles, and he delighted in the camaraderie of his fellow riders of all backgrounds and skills.

He is survived by his wife, Nina, of
Sacramento; daughter, Sage, of Davis; parents Sondra of New York and Morris of New York; and sisters Diane, Joanne and Cheryl of New York.

Graveside services will begin at
11 a.m. on Friday, April 16, at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road in Davis.

SODERQUIST, GOGGANS, GIANNINI, PROBST

Charles "Charley" SODERQUIST (1947-2004) (obit.)

Charles Soderquist

By Sharon Stello,
Enterprise staff writer

Charles "Charley" Soderquist, a businessman and philanthropist who donated countless amounts of time and money to UC Davis, other community organizations and environmental protection efforts, died
Tuesday, March 3, 2004.

Soderquist, 57, suffered a brain hemorrhage and died 12 days later at
Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. He lived next to the Sacramento River in the Natomas area.

A successful businessman, Soderquist founded the
Technology Development Center, a business "incubator" that helped fund startup technology companies.

Soderquist was a generous UC Davis donor; among his gifts was $250,000 to build the
Buehler Alumni & Visitors Center. He also funded the Soderquist-Snyder Distinguished Speaker Series, which brought writer John McPhee to campus in the fall, and he spearheaded a campaign to build a new research center at Lake Tahoe.

His generosity extended far beyond money. He was chairman of the UC Davis Foundation, finishing a two-year term started in 2002. He served as president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association from 1996-98 and was the UCD alumni representative on the University of California Board of Regents from 1997-98. He also served on the UC Davis Connect board of directors as well as numerous boards for community organizations and private companies.

UCD spokeswoman Lisa Lapin said today that Soderquist supported virtually every aspect of the university. In addition to his philanthropy and volunteerism, he taught entrepreneurship courses at the UCD Graduate School of Management.

"He was one of the biggest advocates for the university we have ever had," Lapin said. "It was more than his money, it was the devotion of his time and energy and enthusiasm. Charley didn't do things for recognition, he did them for the possibilities of the future.

"He was just unbelievably kind and generous and gracious," Lapin said. "At the same time, he had a cantankerous nature. When he saw things he thought the university wasn't doing well, he pointed them out. He didn't hesitate to do that."

The exact amount of his monetary contributions to the campus is unknown.

"It's not something we've tabulated," Lapin said, adding that Soderquist was known to give money whenever he noticed a need. Lapin said he once walked into a university department, saw a broken-down copy machine and donated money on the spot to buy a new one.

UCD Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef said in a statement that Soderquist decided more than a decade ago that he was going to add the university to his "causes."

"He went at it analytically, like the good businessman that he was, learning through service on the Foundation and Alumni Association boards," Vanderhoef said. "We laughed many times together about what he one time called the 'blundering, boggling, bungling' policies and academic traditions of the university to which he was giving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"He seemed noticeably more understanding, though never entirely, after his two-year stint as a UC regent," Vanderhoef continued. "One thing was certain, though - through it all he had proud, grateful, fond feelings for the faculty, the history and the hopeful intentions of UC Davis. He was generous with his time and money and he wanted to help.

"That, finally, was what Charley was - a caring man who wanted to help. I can't quite imagine our campus without him."

Celeste Rose, vice chancellor of university relations, said today, "The university has lost a true friend."

"There's no question that he cared for the university and he gave very generously of his time and his treasure and his talent," Rose said. "He always wanted us to be better, so he was also generous in his constructive criticism. He will be sorely missed."
Rose recalled the way Soderquist, with his ponytail and relaxed attitude, contrasted sharply with other UC regents. But he quickly gained the respect of all, she said.

UCD English professor Jack Hicks, a close friend of Soderquist, noted his many interests from science to business to the environment and literature.

"Charley Soderquist was a renaissance man in the true sense," Hicks said.

Among his many talents, Soderquist was also an author. He wrote two books, "The Waring Blender" and "Sturgeon Tales: Stories of the Delta," a series of meditations and essays about life on the river told through conversations with characters including a sturgeon and a beer-drinking river rat.

Soderquist's wife, Jan Goggans, said he was dedicated to the university because "it changed his life." Goggans said the university helped him develop a clear sense of his own value and what he could do in the world.

"He had the biggest heart of anybody I've ever met," she said. "He was very funny,  he delighted in breaking rules and getting things done."

Family and friends said Soderquist also loved the Delta and the natural environment.

"He loves the river passionately, like a wife," Goggans said.

In recent years, Goggans said he put his heart and soul into environmental work. He became very active with the Nature Conservancy and was instrumental in a large land purchase for the Sacramento Valley Conservancy. He was also a consultant with the Resources Law Group, where he helped to negotiate buffer zones and land purchases, and he donated to the Sacramento Regional Community Foundation to provide grants to community land projects, Goggans said.

Born on
Jan. 9, 1947, in San Carlos, Soderquist completed his undergraduate work at San Francisco State University. At UC Davis, he earned a master's degree in 1973 and a doctorate in environmental chemistry in 1978.

BOLTON, GEOGHEGAN, CRAIG, LEWIS, GIBBS

Mary Elizabeth GEOGHEGAN
BOLTON (1926-2004) (obit.)

Mary E.G.
Bolton

Mary Elizabeth Geoghegan Bolton, born
Oct. 25, 1926, passed away peacefully on Jan. 29, 2004, at her home on her beloved Fair Oaks Bluffs. She was 77 years old.

She was born in
Los Angeles and was raised in Glendale, where she graduated from Glendale High School and from Glendale Community College as valedictorian of her class. She attended UCLA where she joined the Alpha Phi sorority and received bachelor's and master's degrees from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. She graduated summa cum laude in 1970, and moved to Fair Oaks.

Her first job on returning to
California was at UC Davis, where she co-founded the Learning Skills Center and counseled re-entry women at the Women' s Research and Resource Center. She was remembered by many for starting the Mr. Women's Center Contest and for her humorous emceeing of the event.

After working several years at UCD, she joined with Nina Krebs to form Bolton and Krebs, a human resources consulting firm that specialized in management development and communications with a number of small and large businesses, and governmental and education agencies. Their particular focus was empowering women in management and all walks of life.

A gifted athlete, she had a passion for tennis and won several tournaments. She continued the sport well into her 70s. An ardent fan of the Sacramento Monarchs, she managed to attend many games, even when ill.

She was an insatiable scholar and fine writer. The consummation of these talents was the publication of her novel, "The Song of Madeleine." At the time of her death, she was editing her second novel, "The Quotidian Deluge," in preparation for publication. Her short stories and other writings won several prestigious awards. She was also an accomplished public speaker and a true "character" who, in the opinion of many who saw her in action, could have been a successful standup comedian.

Her myriad activities as a social activist, environmentalist and feminist led to a diverse group of loving friends. She was a role model for many because of her fantastic wit, unique and fiery enthusiasm for life and learning, as well as her abiding compassion and abundant integrity.

Preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Irene Geoghegan, she is survived by her five children, Catherine Bolton, Bridget Craig, Donal Curtis Bolton Jr., Mollie Lewis and her husband Gary, and Madalain Bolton; her younger sister, Kathleen Gibbs and her husband John; and her younger brother, John Geoghegan and his wife Faith.

She also leaves nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and 11 cousins, nieces and nephews.

"She will be sorely missed by all those who had the good fortune to know her," her family says.

A gathering of her friends and relatives will be held Saturday, May 15, at
2 p.m. at the Fair Oaks Village Park in Fair Oaks. Any Davis friends who would like to come together to remember her are invited to the home of Cynthia Brantley and Nancy Peden, on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Please bring drinks and munchies to share. Either call 758-1693 or e-mail cynthiabrantley@sbcglobal.net to RSVP and obtain directions.
