HOLVERSTOTT,
TODESCO, CLARK, MOORE, CRAMER, WOODRUFF
Amy Elizabeth HOLVERSTOTT (1984-2003) (obit.)
Amy E. Holverstott
Amy Elizabeth Holverstott, a lifelong resident of Davis, died Dec. 6, 2003, in
Davis. She was 19.
She was born Jan. 14, 1984, in Sacramento, the second child of James A.
Holverstott and Patricia L. Todesco. She was born three months premature, and
spent the first six weeks in the hospital before coming home to brother Matt
and her parents at the family residence in Village Homes in Davis.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Thomas C. and Helen L.
Holverstott of Citrus Heights., and by her maternal grandfather, James V. Todesco,
of Concord.
She is survived by her parents, Pat Todesco and Jim Holverstott, both of Davis;
brother, Matthew J. Holverstott of West Sacramento; maternal grandmother, Lois
J. Todesco of Concord; uncle and aunt, Jay and Robyn Todesco; and beloved
cousins Brynn, Kensey and Gaeby, all of Concord.
She is also survived by great aunts and uncles Ronald and Suzanne Holverstott
of Roseville; Dolores Clark, Martha Moore and Lily Holverstott of Sacramento;
Edith and Cameron Cramer of Roseville; Curtis and Lois Woodruff of Cupertino;
and many other beloved family members.
She grew up in Davis. She attended Davis Community Church, sang in the Cherub
Choir and Carol Choir, took part in youth programs, loved helping her mother
lead a Sunday School class for kindergarten-age children, and was baptized on
Oct. 21, 1990.
She attended preschool and after-school programs at Tender Learning Care in the
care friends John and Shirley Huddleson. She loved attending Davis schools:
West Davis Elementary, Patwin Elementary, Emerson Junior High, Davis High and
Martin Luther King Jr. High schools, where she participated eagerly in studies,
made lasting friendships with peers and teachers, excelled academically and
played flute in the music programs at Patwin and Emerson.
She received numerous academic and service awards upon graduation from Emerson
Junior High in June 1999. She earned a college scholarship from the Yolo County
Board of Realtors upon graduation from King High in June 2002.
She played AYSO soccer as a young child, often with her father as coach. She
enjoyed several years in the Brownies and Girl Scouts, with her mother as
co-leader, and loved the Scouts' Camp Menzies summer camp in the Sierra.
She loved studying ballet, first with Lisa (Corbett) Applegate, and then for 10
years with Katy Heil's School of Ballet. She took part in many ballet
productions, from which she took great pleasure. She was invited, by audition,
to attend summer study programs with the Houston Ballet and the Marin Dance
Academy.
She loved all animals, especially her pet dog, Muffy; she spent many hours
volunteering for the SPCA.
In June of 1999, she began a new chapter in her life; she voluntarily entered
various programs for the treatment of mental illness. She eagerly and
consistently sought information, insight and skills to deal with this new and
difficult aspect of her life. She benefited from the care, skill and love of
many programs, professionals and organizations, both locally and in other parts
of the state and country, for four years.
The Rev. Mary Lynn Tobin and Stephen Minister Joann Diel of Davis Community
Church supported her with time and love. Miss Holverstott made many friendships
during those years, and brought the sunshine of her caring nature and endearing
presence to those relationships. She encouraged her family members to seek
support, and was happy that they benefited so much from participation in the
National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
She pursued her love of literature and wrote extensively, especially poetry. One
of her poems was published in an annual volume of literary work of high school
students, compiled by a national educators' organization. Her dream was to
share her poetry with others, as she did so many aspects of her life. She had
begun preparations for publishing them.
Frequent gatherings of her extended family, and summer camping trips in the
redwoods, were important throughout her life.
All whose lives were touched by her are invited to attend a memorial service on
Thursday, at 2 p.m., in the sanctuary of the Davis Community Church at 412 C
St., Davis. Immediately afterward, there will be a gathering in the Fellowship
Hall.
The family is grateful for any remembrances made in Amy Holverstott's name to
Davis Community Church; King High School; NAMI, Yolo County Chapter; Yolo
County Care Continuum; FamiliesFirst; Yolo County Mental Health; the Yolo
County SPCA; the Amy Elizabeth Holverstott Memorial Fund; or any group that
gives support to people and families struggling with mental illness.

SCOTT, GARSON, KUZARA, ZERGER
Elsie Jean SCOTT (1906-2003) (obit.)
Elsie J. Scott
Elsie Jean Scott, a former Davis resident, died in her sleep at Saylor Lane
Nursing Center in Sacramento on Nov. 15, 2003, of respiratory failure and
complications from Parkinson's disease. She was 97.
She was born Elsie Garson in Guelph, Ontario, on Aug. 6, 1906, the first child
of W.A. and Agnes Garson. Her family later immigrated to Buffalo, Wyo., where
she grew up and, in 1925, graduated high school.
A woman of fiercely independent spirit, her family said that when she was in
her 20s she earned money to support her dream of attending college by teaching
in what were called "normal schools" -- rugged, isolated one-room
schools such as Gilbertson, Wallow Creek and the 41 Ranch in Johnson County,
Wyo.
She served a term as Johnson County superintendent of schools before graduating
from the University of Wyoming in 1938. She also attended Iowa State University
and Claremont College.
She married Frank W. Scott in 1941. They lived on their cattle ranch and wheat
farm north of Fort Laramie, Wyo.
She continued teaching in the Lingle, Wyo., and Fort Laramie schools until
1974, when the couple retired and moved to Davis to be close to their son and
grandchildren. She was widowed in 1977.
In addition to her lifelong commitment to education, she was active in Wyoming's
agricultural extension service, including many years of 4-H leadership. She
also served a term as president of the Wyoming Home Demonstration Council,
during which she was a U.S. delegate to the International Association of
Country Women of the World conference in what was then Ceylon.
During her years here, she was involved in the Davis Camera Club and the
Presbyterian Women's Circle, various volunteer activities and caring for her
grandchildren. She was a Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes winner in 1987
-- and the "winners' weekend" events in New York City were among of
her life's highlights.
Her deteriorating health necessitated a move to assisted living in Sacramento's
Trinity House in 1989. Though physically incapacitated for many years, her
family said, she remained alert and aware until the end.
She is survived by her sister, Aileen Garson Kuzara of San Jose; son, F. Eugene
Scott and his wife Susan of Sacramento; grandson, Torry Christian Scott of
Austin, Texas; granddaughter, Erena Scott Zerger of Minneapolis; and four
great-grandsons.
A private family service is planned and her cremated remains will be interred
in Fort Laramie.
Memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation at www.parkinson.org/reqformv.htm
or the National Parkinson Foundation Inc., M.A. Sprinkle, Director of
Development,1501 N.W. 9th Avenue/Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494.

SCHELEN, RING, JOHNSTON
Margaret "Maggie" SCHELEN (1919-2003) (obit.)
Margaret Schelen
Margaret "Maggie" Schelen, a longtime activist in and around Yolo
County, died in her sleep at her home in Sacramento on Nov. 12, 2003, of renal
and congestive heart failure. She was 85.
She was born Margaret Ring in Philadelphia on Aug. 21, 1919. Her family moved
to Los Angeles, where she grew up, two months later.
She married Robert Edward Schelen in 1941. He was serving in the South Pacific
during World War II; she was working the graveyard shift at an airplane
factory. After the war, she worked as a dental assistant and her husband became
a Pasadena police officer. In 1958 she was widowed with two young children.
She was active in public affairs throughout her life -- an interest she
inherited from her father, a founding member of the Ladies Garment Worker's
Union.
She worked for Assemblyman Jesse M. Unruh from 1965 to 1970 in Inglewood. After
he lost his bid for the govenorship, she moved to Sacramento to work for
Assemblyman David Pierson.
In 1973 she took a job for what later became the Speaker's Office of Majority
Services. She worked there under Assembly Speakers Bob Moretti, Leo McCarthy
and Willie Brown until 1984.
She then began coordinating special projects work in the district office of
Rep. Vic Fazio -- often working with Yolo County residents -- until the
congressman retired in 1999. From 1999 until her death, she worked on special
projects for Assemblyman Darrell Steinberg.
She was a member of Citizens for Better Government. In the 1980s she served on
the Sacramento County Mental Health Board and played a role in the creation of
the Fruitridge Community Center. In the early 1990s, Fazio appointed her
delegate to the White House Conference on Aging.
She volunteered often for a variety of humanitarian and civic causes until
recently breaking her hip. She worked as a greeter at many events, including
political ones, earning the nickname "Maggie at the Door."
She was a recipient of several awards for her activism, among them the Lawrence
O'Brien National Democrat of the Year Award, the Harry S. Truman "Give 'Em
Hell, Harry" Democrat of the Year Award, the Sacramento County Democratic Central
Committee's Democrat of the Year Award, and the 9th Assembly District Woman of
the Year.
Her son, Davis activist Bob Schelen, said his mother was a valued mentor to
many people in and out of public life. It was a statement to his mother's kind
and loving nature that she maintained lifelong friendships with people, he
said, no matter what political sides they took.
Frank Rigani, a former co-worker, donated $10,000 to help create the Maggie
Schelen Public Service Scholarship at the King Hall School of Law at UC Davis.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a student who exemplifies her public
service.
She is survived by her sister, Grace Johnston of Arcadia; daughter, Delilah
Schelen of Sacramento; and son, Robert Charles Schelen of Davis.
A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. in the
Jesse M. Unruh Room (No. 4202) at the state Capitol in Sacramento.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Maggie Schelen Scholarship
Fund care of the UCD Law School, 400 Mrak Hall Drive, Davis, CA 95616; Loaves
and Fishes, P.O. Box 2161, Sacramento, CA 95812; or St. James Armenian Church,

Imogene 'Teddy' HILL (1927-2003) (obit.)
Imogene 'Teddy' Hill
Imogene "Teddy" Hill was to be buried today alongside her husband at Arlington
National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Born Feb. 26, 1927, in Fairbank, Pa., she
died Sept. 4, 2003, at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento with her family by her
side. She was 78 years old.
She had a rich heritage of interest in education, service to and a love for
others throughout her life. She was featured in Neighbors Magazine in 1991 and
was quoted as saying, "The four big things for me are my family and
friends, the stage, teaching and real estate. Those have been the fabric of my
life."
As a child of 3, she acted on the vaudeville stages of Pittsburgh, Pa. She was
Little Imogene, a diminutive bundle of energy, who tried to steal the show from
the likes of Cab Calloway and Dick Powell. She and her brother Aldino, also a
dancer, entertained as a brother/sister act on local stages in and around the
Pittsburgh area.
During World War II, she studied at Temple University in Philadelphia,
graduating in 1946. While there, she starred in a production of "Junior
Miss" and was awarded a listing of "Who's Who in American Colleges
and Universities."
In 1949, she married a young West Point graduate from the Class of 1946, Steven
Hilovsky. He later changed his name to Hill. She traveled with him around the
world on assignments.
From 1962 to 1964 they lived in Palo Alto, where she taught elementary school
in the Whisman School District in Mountain View. One of her students was Steven
Jobs, founder of Apple Computer Corp. Jobs, who was in her fourth-grade class,
called her "one of the saints in my life," and has credited her with
being a strong influence in his success.
After their assignment in Mountain View, the Hills traveled to the island of
Guam. While there, she produced and directed a production of the musical
"Bye, Bye Birdie." Upon returning to California, she taught at Del
Dayo Elementary School in Sacramento's San Juan Unified School District, where
her daughter, Karen Hill Garman, now teaches art.
Mrs. Hill also enrolled at UC Davis. In the early 1970s, while in her 50s, she
earned a master of arts degree. She also studied in India and was named a
Fulbright Scholar in 1976.
In 1977, she was recognized for her many achievements and dedication to
teaching by being selected by the California Teachers Association as the San
Juan School District's Teacher of the Year.
More recently, she had been a real estate entrepreneur and a civic leader in
North Sacramento, a community for which she had long fought, in hopes of having
it achieve what she described as "its ultimate potential."
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Steven Hill, who died
March 14, 1989, and her brother, Aldino Guerrieri of Mechanicsburg, Pa., who

Janell Diane GOHRING (1962-2003) (obit.)
Janell D. Gohring
Janell Diane Gohring of Davis died Oct. 23, 2003. Born March 8, 1962, in
Sacramento, she was 41 years old.
She attended Sylvan School District and graduated from Beyer High School in
Modesto, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and obtained her master's degree in child
development from UC Davis.
She is survived by the family she cherished: her husband Tom and their children
Katherine, Ashley and Caroline. She is also survived by her parents, Frank and
Lana Dotson; two sisters, Jena Dotson and Judy Bluehorse; and two brothers,
Jeff Kurk and Frank Dotson. In addition, she leaves her mother-in-law and
father-in-law and numerous relatives.
She was predeceased by her father, James D. Kurk, who died when she was 6.
She was an enthusiastic and dedicated fourth-grade teacher at Marguerite Montgomery
Elementary School in Davis. Previously, she worked as a short- and long-term
substitute teacher in Davis and in Winters.
She cared deeply about her students, and worked long hours professionally, but
was most passionately devoted to her family.
She obtained her teaching credential through the Cal Teach program, which
enabled her to complete much of her work at home online, on her own time, while
staying at home with her children, and she completed her student teaching at
Willett Elementary School in Davis.
Teaching was her second career. She previously worked for 14 years as a child
life specialist, where she profoundly helped children who were hospitalized for
cancer treatment and their families by providing developmental and emotional
support.
She engaged with her three active daughters tirelessly in numerous activities
in town and in the Bay Area, and volunteered extensively for the Davis Musical
Theatre Company, Girl Scouts, Redbud Montessori School and numerous other
community activities.
She started the first Davis chapter of the Roots and Shoots organization, which
operates under the auspices of the Jane Goodall Institute. She loved children
and animals, and with her family, raised a new puppy, Scout, over this past
summer.
She also enjoyed music, dining outdoors and traveling to beautiful places,
including India, Yosemite, Mendocino and Hawaii. This past spring break, she
traveled to Maui with her family, her parents and several other Davis families
where her adventures included swimming with sea turtles and a wild ocean
rafting ride.
"Janell was caring and compassionate," her family says. "She
gave her time and energy selflessly and she will be painfully missed and
remembered dearly by all who knew her."
A memorial service will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Unitarian Universalist
Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road.

CARROLL,
RICHARDSON, KILBORN
Frances Whitman
CARROLL (1918-2003) (obit.)
Frances W. Carroll
Frances Whitman
Carroll, founder of the International Friendship Committee and a Davis resident
for more than 50 years, died July 2, 2003. She was 84.
Born Sept. 18,
1918 in Sacramento, the second of four children, she grew up on the San
Francisco Peninsula and graduated from Palo Alto High School. She attended the
University of Washington at Spokane, then joined the Red Cross at the start of
World War II. It was while she was stationed in Tucson, Ariz., that she met and
married Floyd Dale Carroll.
After the war he
completed his doctorate at UC Berkeley, then accepted a position as a professor
of animal science at UC Davis. They spent the next 54 years together in Davis,
until his death in 1998. She moved briefly to Monterey in 2001, returning early
this year.
Fran's greatest
joys were being with people and traveling, her family said.
She volunteered
and entertained on and off campus, and during sabbaticals abroad. She founded
the International Friendship Committee, a group to help international students
at UCD adjust to life in a new country. She also devoted time to public health
organizations, and was particularly interested in helping young women improve
the quality of life for themselves and their children through Planned
Parenthood.
Fran and her
husband traveled extensively during sabbaticals in Sri Lanka, Hawaii, Chile and
Australia, visiting more than 20 countries in all. In Honolulu they found what
they called their "special place" -- after retiring, they split their
time between Hawaii and Davis, where they both enjoyed spending time with
students and friends.
She had an
indomitable spirit and a kind and hopeful word for everyone, her family said.
Never one to complain, she focused instead on encouraging others with her
compassion and humor.
Her sister Ann
called her a "social director," always planning trips and activities
that are now treasured memories for those who took part.
She is survived by
her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Rich Richardson of Gilroy, and her
sister Ann Kilborn of Medford, Ore.
At the request of
the deceased, no memorial service will be held.

SCHIMMEL,
VERMEER, SCHEFFER
Arie
SCHIMMEL (1914-2003) (obit.)
Arie
Schimmel
Arie
Schimmel died on April 28, 2003, at the Sacramento home of his daughter, Ardys
Schimmel, with his wife of 63 years and other family members at his bedside. He
was 88 years old. The cause of his death was congestive heart failure.
Born
on Aug. 20, 1914, on a farm southeast of Sioux Center, Iowa, he was the son of
Albert and Dena (Vermeer) Schimmel. He graduated from rural school in 1928 and
began farming with his father. In 1933 he moved with his parents to a farm two
miles southeast of Sioux Center, where he lived for the next 43 years.
On
June 8, 1939, he married Magdalene Scheffer in the Carmel Reformed Church.
The
couple moved to a home on acreage on his parent's farm near Sioux Center. In
1951 his family exchanged homes with his parents and he and his wife lived
there until 1976, when they moved to Sioux Center. In 1993 they moved to Davis,
to be near family. They resided here until
March
2003, when they moved to The Atrium retirement home in Carmichael.
After
marrying, Arie owned and operated corn shellers and farmed with his father. He
also operated a threshing machine for Wandscheer Brothers for a number of years.
In 1944, he sold his corn shellers, expanded his farming operation, and started
milking, developing a purebred Aryshire dairy herd. After selling his herd in
1959, he expanded his cattle and hog operation. He retired from daily farming
when he moved to Sioux Center.
During
his years of farming, he was active in the Farm Bureau. On two different
occasions, his family hosted International Farm Youth exchange students: the
first, Kees Perdock from the Netherlands, spent a year with the Schimmel family
in 1954 and 1955; the second, Gopal Krishna,
spent
the summer of 1958.
Arie
became a 4-H club leader in 1950. He was a member of the Sioux County Youth
Fair board and was its president during its years of expansion and a move to a
new site. From 1958 to 1983, he was a salesman for DeKalb seed corn.
In
1974 he was appointed to the Sioux County Board of Supervisors, filling a
vacancy. He was elected in successive elections until retiring in 1992, serving
as board chairman for many years.
In
his free time he played and managed for softball teams, and he liked to hunt
and fish. An active sports fan, he followed the Sioux Center High School and
Northwestern College athletic teams. After moving to California, he became an
avid San Francisco Giants and 49ers fan, as
well
as a Sacramento Kings supporter. He enjoyed family gatherings, and he was
exceedingly fond of his grandchildren.
An
active member of the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center until 1990, he and
his wife then helped organize Sioux Center's New Life Reformed Church. In
Davis, he joined the Davis Community Church. At his death, his membership was
being transferred to Christ Community Church in Carmichael.
He
is survived by his wife and his four children, Allan of Philadelphia, Pa.; Leon
of Davis; Ardys of Sacramento; and Nancy of Salem, Ore. He is also survived by
10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
sister, Harriet W. Vermeer.
In
accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated upon his death.
A
memorial service will be held at Christ Community Church on Saturday, June 14,
at 10:30 a.m. The family requests that contributions, in lieu of flowers, be

Margaret
Anne (FENNER) STEUBING (1940-2003) (obit.)
Margaret
A. (Fenner) Steubing
Margaret
Anne (Fenner) Steubing died on April 3, 2003, in Carmichael, just two days after
her 42nd wedding anniversary to her best friend and husband Bud Steubing.
Born
in Toronto, Canada, on Feb. 16, 1940, she was 63 years old.
Her
greatest gift was her compassion for her family and for everyone she met. She
had the uncanny ability to make people feel unique. When she was with you, you
were the most important person in the world. She had a real affinity for
children. She firmly believed that youths should have a safe place to stay.
Based on this belief, she never locked her front door and over time, many
youths, mostly teenagers, would walk to the Steubing house for lunch, or just
come over to talk to her about their
problems.
This
therapist role carried over to her work as founder and owner of Davis Time for
Travel. Many of her clients would just come in to talk. As one client told her,
"You know more about my family than I do!"
Life
was her adventure. An avid traveler, she spent time exploring Europe and Asia,
and loved spontaneous trips with her family and friends to catch something
exciting happening near her own back yard. She loved to read, enjoyed the
theater, voraciously followed politics and humanitarian issues, and supported
local artists, art organizations, children's charities, and other local causes.
Most
of all, her passion and love was for her husband and children. Family
gatherings, hanging out and talking with her kids, and trips to their summer
home at Six-Mile Lake in Canada were priceless and highly treasured moments to
her.
She
began her career as the youngest manager for Mohawk Airlines while living with
her husband in Rochester, N.Y. The family moved to Davis in 1966, and she
worked for American Airlines. She was active in the Davis Parent Nursery School
and various community groups such as STEAC.
She
graduated with honors from UC Davis in 1981 with a degree in sociology. After
graduation, she became a social worker and made it a practice to bring clients
(usually children from broken homes) to the Steubing house for love and family
life. On many occasions, they stayed for months and even years.
In
1983, she founded Davis Time for Travel, a local travel agency now operated by
daughter Heather Zamecnik in Davis. She retired in 1997.
She
is survived by husband Bud Steubing of Woodland, children Heather Anne Zamecnik
and her children Jacob Alan Zamecnik and Kayla Anne Zamecnik of Dixon, Bruce
Steubing and his wife Debra Steubing of Carmichael, Susan Steubing of
Carmichael, Michael Steubing of Woodland, and parents Margaret and Bruce Fenner
of Toronto, and sister Barbara Hendricks of Toronto.
An open house celebration to honor her life will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Heather Zamecnik's residence, 1620 Miwok Court in Dixon.
In
lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the children's
charity of the donor's choice.
