REEVES,

Mary Ellen REEVES (1902–2000) (obit.)

Mary Ellen Reeves passed away in Sacramento on Aug. 18, 2000, at the age of 98.

A native of Cainsville, Missouri, Mrs. Reeves graduated from Duke University with a degree in music. She spent most of her adult life as a minister’s wife.

Prior to attending college, Mrs. Reeves taught in a one-room school for three years, riding her horse to school each day. She was a long-time member of D.A.R., and a past chaplain. She was a resident of the Sacramento area for 39 years, and was active with women’s group at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She was the devoted mother of James Richard Reeves, and Roulou Avila. Loving grandmother of Thomas Tubman, Rene Carrick, Terance Tubman, Bethany Reeves, Stanley reeves, Bradley Reeves, Creighton Avila, and Celeste Avila, she also leaves behind four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Harold V. Reeves, former pastor of Winters Christian church.

Funeral services have been held.

DeWEESE,

Tony DeWEESE (1952–1991) (obit.)

Tony DeWeese, dies at home

Memorial services were held Saturday, Oct. 12, in Sunset Chapel of the Chimes in Sacramento, for Tony DeWeese, 39, who died here on Oct. 2.

Inurnment was in the Sunset Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento.

He is survived by two children, Shawn and Tony DeWeese, Jr., by his mother, Dorothy DeWeese, of Winters; a brother, Edward Peters; and a sister, Marlene Cody.

He was a native of Sacramento.

Lendel C. TAYLOR (1910–1991) (obit.)

Graveside rites held here for Lendel Taylor

Graveside services were held in the Winters Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday for Lendel Coleson Taylor, 81, of Sacramento, who died Oct. 8, in a Sacramento Hospital.

He was a retired State Police Officer and a third-generation Winters native. His father, George Taylor, who died in November 1948, was the sexton at the Winters Cemetery.

Lendel was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army as a military policeman. After retiring from the Army as a first sergeant, he worked for 20 years with the State Police, retiring for the second time in 1971 as a sergeant.

He was a member of the California State Police Association and a Sacramento resident for more than 40 years.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Pauline, and sons, George Len and Samuel “Glen” Taylor, all of Sacramento, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rollin Haile Taylor.

MULLIKEN, PINGREE, CHAPMAN

Helen H. MULLIKEN (1908–1990) (obit.)

Helen Harriett Mulliken dies at 82

Helen Harriett Mulliken died at Sutter Davis Hospital on June 14, 1990. Mrs. Mulliken was born in Sacramento on January 10, 1908, and was 82 years of age. She was a homemaker for 64 years and was preceded in death by her husband Earl Mulliken, who died in Sacramento in 1978. She had moved to Winters six months ago. Mrs. Mulliken was past president of East Sacramento Chapter #1325 of the American Association of Retired Persons.

She is survived by three children: Mildred Pingree of Orinda, Tom Mulliken of Fort Worth, Texas, and Nancy Chapman of Winters. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. In compliance with the deceased’s wishes, there will be no funeral services.

The family wishes to publicly express their appreciation for the care and concern of the people at Sutter Davis Hospital.

RAMOS, LOPEZ

Pete L. RAMOS (1939–1990) (obit.)

Services for Pete Lopez Ramos

Visitation will be held tonight (Thursday) from 6 to 9 p.m. at Smith’s Colonial Chapel for Pete Lopez Ramos, 51. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 22, at 10 a.m. in Winters Cemetery.

Mr. Ramos was born in Marchal, Spain, May 15, 1939. He died in Sacramento, Tuesday, June 19, 1990. He came to Winters with his parents and brothers in 1948 and was a graduate of Winters High School. At age 19 he moved to Sacramento where he owned and operated his barber shop for 32 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Ramos of Rancho Cordova, a son, Tony Ramos of Sacramento, and four brothers, Abelardo Ramos, John Ramos, Faustino Ramos and Henry Ramos, all of Winters.

PUGH, HANSEN, EGGLESTON

Dorothy M. Pugh (1910–2000) (obit.)

Dorothy M. Pugh, 89, died of stroke complications on April 6, 2000, in Sacramento.

Born in 1910 to Henry J. Hansen and the late Kate F. Eggleston, she grew up on a ranch outside Davis. She was a member of the Tremont Church Mite Society. As a girl, she attended the old Tremont Church on Montgomery Road, near the present Willowbank.

A bright, studious child, she went regularly to the Davis Library, which was situated in Hattie Weber’s home.

Though the family had almond and fruit trees in Davis and Chico, her mother taught School in Elmira to assure Dorothy’s higher education. Her first job after graduation from San Jose State College was as a teacher in Winters and it was there that she met her husband, Bill Pugh, a Winters High School teacher and coach.

The houses on her grandmother Lucy Eggleston’s property on University Avenue, near the UC Davis campus, were designated as historic structures by the city of Davis. She rented them to graduate students and families at unrealistically low rents over the years because she felt that young people needed a chance, family members said.

She raised her family in Winters and directed the first children’s choruses at the Winters schools. She was the organist for more than 30 years for Yosolano Chapter No. 218 in Winters, commuting in later years from her home in Sacramento.

She was a member and organist for nearly 30 years for Palm Shrine and White Shrine of Jerusalem in Sacramento.

She was honored by being chosen as grand organist for The Order of Eastern Star in the state of California 1977 by Patricia Quibell, worthy grand matron, and traveled with the senior officers of the order for that year, visiting Eastern Star chapters throughout the state.

She is survived by two sons, William Pugh of Stockton and Richard Pugh of Sacramento; two daughters-in-law, Josie and Dale Pugh; four adult grandchildren, Jason, Josh, Thomas and his wife Barbara and Beth and her husband Ingo; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry J. and Kate F. Hansen; grandparents, J. W. and Lucy Eggleston; and brother Willis E. Hansen.

Visitation will be held from 12-7 p.m. at the Nicoletti, Culjis and Herberger Funeral Home at 5400 Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento, Thursday, April 13. Interment at Winters Cemetery, Friday April 14 at 11 a.m., where an Eastern Star Service will be performed. A memorial service and a celebration of her life will be held the next day at 10:30 a.m. at Nicoletti, Culjis and Herberger, with a reception to follow at Mrs. Pugh’s Sacramento home.

CAMPOS, KAMERER, BLAYLOCK

Herman Campos

Herman Campos passed away on May 16, 2000 in Sacramento. Born on July 12, 1040 in Winters, he was 59 years old.

A 1958 graduate of Winters High School, he worked at the Winters Food Center during his teen years and went on to work at Raley’s, from where he retired. He was a 35-year resident of Sacramento.

Mr. Campos is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda; son Richard; sisters Marian Kammerer of Winters and Bernice Blaylock of Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father Richard Campos and mother Eugenia Campos.

A graveside services (sic) was held on Monday, May 22, 15 2:30 p.m. at the Winters Cemetery.

STONE, BUMPUS, TALBOT, WHITING

Melvin C. Stone

Melvin C. Stone passed away on Feb. 15, 1999, at his home in Sacramento. Born in Oklahoma on April 25, 1919, he was 79 years old.

Melvin retired to Sacramento upon selling a successful 60 acre almond orchard in the Capay Valley, west of Esparto. He was a presence on tennis courts through his 79^th year, holding championship status in San Francisco and Woodland. He went to Sacramento State College in 1987 to rekindle his interest in painting and sculpture. He participated in four art shows in the Sacramento area, including the State Capitol Rotunda and Florin Mall. He made clay sculptures that represent experiences in his early life and people he knew.

Mr. Stone served in the U. S. Navy in World War II, and in the Military Sea Transport Service during the Korean Conflict, returning to San Francisco to become a successful businessman. He took up tennis and studied horticulture.

He was employed with the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department as a gardener for over 20 years, working at several parks including Stern Grove and Golden Gate Park. He was moved by the passion of black and Native American leaders to “make a difference” in the world. Mel drew larger than life charcoal drawings of “dynamic faces” and clay busts of persons with “soul.”

Mr. Stone is survived by his sister, Elveeta Bumpus of Kansas City, Kansas; three children, Michelle Talbot of Antioch, Sandra Whiting of Kirkland, Washington, and Melvin Stone Jr. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A memorial gathering of family and friends was held on March 7, at the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

Sarah Thurber REYNOLDS (1913-2002) (obit.)

Sarah Thurber Reynolds

Sarah Thurber Reynolds passed away on May 20, 2002, at the Sierra Health Facility in Davis. Born on July 27, 1913 in Sacramento, she was 88 years old.

Sarah was a descendent of two prominent pioneer families of Northern Solano County - the Wolfskills and the Thurbers. She was the valedictorian of the Winters High School class of 1931 and a 1935 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. She was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority, Thalian Players and Little Theater. Sarah taught English at Woodland High School and began her real estate career in 1970. She was a real estate broker and owner of Reynolds Realty until 1996 when she was disabled by a stroke. She was active in the Republican Party, the Woodland Historical Society, the Woodland Opera House and the Native Daughters of the Golden West. She was an avid gardener and traveler, having lived in Turkey in the 1950s. She enjoyed photography and cooking, which was evident in her many awards and ribbons.

Sarah is survived by her children, Sargent T. Reynolds and wife Lynn, Ransome W. Reynolds and his wife Joyce, Christine Reynolds Rose and her husband Jim, all of Woodland; Anne S. Reynolds, Nancy Reynolds Cochran and husband Sam of Sacramento; grandchildren Dana Ness and husband and Andy James, Ryan, Brandon and Darrin Bird, Rachelle Reynolds Arroyave; nephew Terry Thurber and wife Lora; niece Vivian Van Doren and husband Charles; grand-nieces Janelle Thurber and Kerry Van Doren and grand-nephew Jason Van Doren. She is also survived by extended family members Mike and Mikki Simsek, Omar and Robin Simsek and Zeynep Simsek of Corona del Mar.

Her parents Rufus Waterman Thurber and Nancy Wolfskill Thurber, devoted husband of 57 years, Sargent M. Reynolds, a son William Rufus Reynolds and brother Kenneth Waterman Thurber, preceded her in death.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 42 Roman Court, Woodland. Remembrances may be made to the American Stroke Association, Woodland Opera House, Youth Summer Theater Camp Program or the charity of the donor’s choice.

McBRIDE, SIKES, DAVIS

Jean Sikes McBRIDE (1916-2002) (obit.)

Jean Sikes McBride

Jean Sikes McBride, sister of Winters resident Dorothy Davis and a long time Citrus Heights resident, died in Yuba City, Saturday, Feb. 2, at the age of 85. She was a fourth generation California and twelfth generation American with ancestors in the Jamestown, Virginia settlement in 1607 and on the Mayflower in 1620.

She was born on a farm established by her grandfather in the Tremont District of Solano County. She graduated from the San Jose Normal School (now San Jose State University), in 1937 and taught school in Kelseyville and Lincoln before marrying Thomas (Sandy) McBride and moving to Antelope.

She continued teaching in the Citrus Heights schools for several more years, before retiring to continue her service to children as a leader in PTA, Cub Scouts, 4-H, as well as serving as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent at the First Presbyterian Church in Roseville. She and Sandy were also long-time sponsors of the church Mariners Club for couples. In addition, she was a member of the Antelope Sewing Club for 58 years.

Mrs. McBride is survived by her sons Donald Thomas McBride of New Jersey and Dale Gene McBride of Yuba City; grandchildren Sean Thomas McBride of Incline, Nevada, Kathryn Suzanne McBride of Davis and Thomas Jonathan McBride of Boston, Massachusetts. Among other extended family she leaves her nephew, Dr. Bill Davis of Winters.

A memorial service was held Saturday, February 9 at the First Presbyterian Church in Roseville, proceeded by a private burial.
