GEORGE R. CARTER
George
R. Carter, Sheriff of Nevada County, who is discharging his official duties in
a manner that has won for him high words of praise, was born in North
Bloomfield, California, on the 27th of February, 1887, and is a son
of Randolph and Gertrude (Black) Carter.
Both parents are still living, the father, who was born at North
Bloomfield, being seventy-three years old, and they are among the community’s
most highly honored residents. One of
Randolph Carter’s brothers, R. D. Carter, served as Sheriff of Nevada County
from 1882 to 1886.
George
R. Carter attended the public schools at North Bloomfield and the high school
at Nevada City, and then turned his attention to mining gold, in which he has
been successful. He is a stockholder in
several quartz mines, one of which is the Hoge mine, and all are being operated
profitably at this time. In 1919 Mr.
Carter was appointed deputy sheriff of Nevada county under Sheriff John R.
Martin, serving until 1922 and four years later was elected to the office of
sheriff, and was reelected in 1930, a testimonial to his ability and
efficiency. He is absolutely fearless in
the performance of duty, knows no favorites and is honest in word and action.
In
his political views Mr. Carter is a strong Republican and since young manhood
has taken a keen interest in public affairs.
He is a member of Forest Lodge, No. 66, F. & A. M., of Alleghany,
California; Nevada Chapter, No. 6, R. A. M.; Nevada City Lodge, No. 518, B. P.
O. E., and was one of the organizers and is a charter member of Thomas Haggerty
Post, No. 930, A. L., of which he is a past commander. A veteran of the World War, he enlisted in
Company C, Three Hundred and Sixteenth Field Signal Battery, was sent overseas,
where he was assigned to the Ninety-first Division, and took an active part in
the fighting at St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Ypres and Ordenaive. He returned to the United States on May 4,
1919, and was honorably discharged at Camp Kearney.
